Chapter 6: The Law Steps In

The lead officer, a broad-shouldered sergeant with graying temples and an expression of grim professional fatigue, stepped purposefully between Gareth and Marissa. His heavy leather duty belt creaked as he squared his shoulders, immediately taking command of the chaotic room with the calm authority of a man who had seen the absolute worst of human nature in settings just as opulent as this one. "Gareth Miller?" the sergeant asked, his voice a deep, gravelly baritone that cut through the murmurs like a knife. Gareth froze, his outstretched hand suspended mid-air like a broken wing. He slowly pulled his arm back, his chest heaving as he stared at the gleaming silver handcuffs dangling from the officer's tactical utility belt. "There... there's been a misunderstanding," Gareth babbled, his voice pitching upward into a pathetic whine that bore no resemblance to the smooth corporate executive who had delivered a toast to his bride less than an hour ago. "It’s a civil matter. A domestic dispute. We were just having a disagreement about... about wedding arrangements. You don't need to be here." The sergeant didn't blink. He pulled a folded sheet of paper from his breast pocket and unfolded it with deliberate slowness. "We received a complaint for attempted extortion, child endangerment, and filing a false police report regarding stolen property, backed by high-resolution digital evidence transmitted directly from this venue's secure server," the sergeant recited flatly. "Mr. Miller, turn around and place your hands behind your back." The silence in the ballroom was absolute. Even the soft clinking of glassware from the bar area had ceased entirely as every guest watched the dramatic conclusion of the fairytale romance unfold into a literal criminal booking. Gareth looked desperately around the room, seeking a sympathetic eye, an ally, a friend from the country club who would step forward and vouch for his character. But every face he met was a wall of cold, unyielding judgment. Even his business associates had turned their backs, hurriedly whispering to their spouses and checking their watches as if eager to distance themselves from the unfolding catastrophe. With a pathetic, shuddering sigh that sounded like air escaping a punctured tire, Gareth slowly turned around and pressed his palms against the edge of the mahogany cake table—the very table he had been leaning against when his lies were first exposed. The metal cuffs clicked shut around his wrists with a sharp, metallic finality that echoed through the cavernous hall like a death knell for his social ambitions. As the officers guided him toward the double doors, Gareth cast one last, venomous glare toward Marissa, his eyes burning with a impotent hatred that confirmed every suspicion she had ever harbored about his dark, vindictive soul.
