Chapter 3: The Unraveling of Lies

Gareth tried to push off the table, his tuxedo trousers slightly askew, his posture slouching from the confident alpha male he had projected during the ceremony into a cornered, pathetic animal. He pointed a trembling, manicured finger toward the tech booth at the back of the hall where the young AV technician stood nervously holding a wireless tablet. "That... that file was corrupted!" Gareth choked out, his voice cracking with a high-pitched desperation that destroyed whatever dignity he had left. "It’s a deepfake! Someone hacked the venue server to ruin my reputation! Look at it—it’s impossible!" His words hung in the air, pathetic and transparent, greeted only by a collective, icy scoff from the nearest tables. The AV technician, a college student working a weekend gig, stepped boldly to the edge of the mezzanine railing. "It’s not a deepfake, sir," the young man called out clearly across the silent hall, holding up the tablet for all to see. "That feed came directly from the hardwired security hub in the manager's office. Timestamped, unedited, straight from the cloud. I just pulled up what your own groomsman asked me to queue up for the slideshow montage." At the mention of the groomsman, heads whipped around toward the side of the room where Julian, Gareth’s best man and business partner, stood rigidly by the exit. Julian’s face had gone the color of spoiled milk. He raised his hands defensively, backing away toward the heavy oak double doors as if trying to physically distance himself from the toxic fallout of Gareth’s catastrophic scheme. "Don't look at me," Julian muttered defensively to the guests nearest him, shaking his head rapidly. "I didn't know he was going to frame a kid. He told me the video was just a funny clip of the flower girl dropping her basket during the rehearsal. He lied to me, too!" The betrayal rippled outward, tearing through the inner circle of Gareth’s loyalists like a shockwave. Friendships forged in country clubs and corporate boardrooms evaporated in seconds as men who had known Gareth for years realized they were standing next to a calculating liar who would sacrifice an innocent seven-year-old girl just to secure a spiteful upper hand in a domestic dispute. Marissa, still kneeling on the floor, didn't even bother to turn around to watch Gareth’s pathetic defense crumble. She was too busy helping Lily straighten her white flower girl sash, whispering gentle reassurances into her ear, completely cutting Gareth out of the oxygen supply of her attention.
