Chapter 5: Sirens in the Distance

A faint, high-pitched wail began to filter through the heavy double-glazed windows of the Grandview Ballroom, muffled at first by the thick masonry of the historic building, but growing steadily louder and more unmistakable with every passing second. Red and blue light fractured against the crystal chandeliers overhead, painting dancing crimson and sapphire streaks across the white-clothed tables and the horrified faces of the remaining wedding guests. Marissa didn't flinch at the sound of the approaching sirens; instead, a grim sense of satisfaction settled over her features. She reached into the beaded evening bag resting on a nearby chair, retrieved her phone, and tapped the screen to dismiss the call screen from dispatch. "You didn't think I was just going to let you walk away with a slap on the wrist and a ruined party, did you, Gareth?" Marissa asked softly, her voice carrying easily across the hushed room as she walked slowly toward him. Gareth’s eyes bulged in pure terror as the reality of the police presence finally penetrated his panicked brain. "You called the cops?" he whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely form the consonants. "On our wedding day? Marissa, think of the scandal! Think of the press! My firm—the investors—they’ll destroy me!" "Your firm is already drafting your termination letter, Julian told me as much," Marissa replied coldly, stopping just a few feet away from him. "And as for the scandal, you brought this house of cards down with your own hands when you decided to frame my daughter for grand larceny to cover up your own financial insecurities." Gareth’s face drained of the last remaining drop of color. "Financial... what are you talking about?" he stammered, though a subtle twitch in his left eye betrayed his sudden, gut-wrenching realization. Marissa tilted her head, a cold smile touching the corners of her lips. "Did you really think I didn't look into the prenuptial amendments you kept pressuring me to sign last week? The ones that gave you full control of my family trust if anything happened to Lily’s guardianship status? You didn't just want to humiliate her, Gareth. You wanted to legally orphan her so you could loot my estate to cover your gambling debts at the downtown club." The ballroom erupted into a fresh wave of gasps and outraged whispers. Julian, still hovering near the exit, buried his face in his hands, silently confirming the devastating accusation with his sheer lack of denial. Gareth lunged forward in a desperate, last-ditch bid to grab Marissa’s wrist, but before his fingers could even brush the expensive lace of her sleeve, heavy footfalls echoed behind him as two uniformed police officers pushed through the ballroom doors.
