Chapter 7

Back inside the private study, the heavy mahogany door was violently shoved open, crashing against the interior wall with a loud bang. Agent Miller, a sharp-featured federal investigator in a charcoal suit, stepped into the room flanked by two armed agents in tactical vests.

Evelyn Vance was right behind them, her dark green gown sweeping across the threshold, her face contorted into a mask of righteous indignation. “I demand to know by whose authority you are barging into a private residence without escort,” she snapped, pointing a black-gloved finger at Agent Miller’s lapel badge.

Agent Miller didn't even glance at her. His eyes were fixed on Charles Vance, who stood calmly by the fireplace, and Julian, who remained seated behind the oak desk with his hands clasped loosely in front of him.

“Charles Vance, Julian Vance,” Agent Miller said clearly, his voice echoing in the wood-paneled room. “You are both being detained for questioning regarding wire fraud, embezzlement from a federally protected non-profit entity, and conspiracy to obstruct justice. Here are your warrants.”

Charles stepped forward, making no move to resist as the tactical agents advanced. He extended his wrists calmly, his expression serene. “There is no need for theatrics, Agent Miller. We’ll cooperate fully. Every document you need to understand the structural failures of this foundation is located in the primary server drive downstairs.”

“Charles, have you lost your mind?” Evelyn shrieked, her composure finally shattering completely. She rushed forward, grabbing her husband’s arm. “You don't give them anything! You tell them this is a malicious fabrication by disgruntled employees!”

Charles gently but firmly pulled his arm away from her grasp. He looked down at his wife with a gaze filled with profound, sorrowful clarity. “Evelyn, the game is over. The foundation was built on lies, and we spent decades pretending the rot wasn't eating away at the foundation from the inside. Let it go. For once in our lives, let the truth stand in the light.”

Agent Miller gestured to his men, who moved to secure Charles and Julian, escorting them toward the exit. Evelyn stood alone in the center of the study, the amber light from the fireplace casting long, distorted shadows across the expensive rugs. Her alliances had evaporated, her husband was being led away in handcuffs, and her empire had dissolved into ash in a matter of hours.
