Chapter 11

Miles away from the grand estate, the municipal airfield sat quietly under the cool, gray morning sky. A twin-engine private charter plane idled on the tarmac, its propellers humming a steady, low rhythm that vibrated through the damp concrete.

Clara and Sofia sat inside the aircraft cabin, staring out the scratched window at the runway lights stretching into the distance. The adrenaline of the escape had faded, replaced by a profound, hollow exhaustion. They were free from the gilded cage of the Vance estate, but the uncertainty of what lay ahead hung heavily over them like a thick fog.

The cabin door opened, and Maya Lin stepped inside, followed closely by Marcus. Maya looked composed, her dark green gown replaced by a practical wool coat and sensible travel boots. She closed the cabin door, locking it securely before walking down the narrow aisle to sit across from the two young women.

“Are we really leaving?” Sofia asked quietly, her voice trembling as she looked up at Maya. “Is it over?”

“It’s over, Sofia,” Maya said gently, reaching across the small table to place her hand over the young woman’s cold fingers. “The life you knew is gone, but the life you choose to build from this moment on belongs entirely to you. No trusts controlled by your parents, no foundation money tainted by exploitation. Just your own hard work, your own choices, and your own future.”

Clara looked intently at Maya, her eyes searching the older woman’s face for any sign of deception. “And what about you, Maya? You helped orchestrate the whole thing. The federal investigators are going to want answers. Are you safe?”

“I gave them the answers, Clara,” Maya replied with a faint, reassuring smile. “And more importantly, I gave them the evidence. My part in this chapter is finished. Marcus and I are heading west. We have our own lives to reclaim.”

Marcus stood near the cockpit door, nodding in agreement. He looked out the window as the first rays of golden sunlight pierced the heavy cloud cover, bathing the airfield in a warm, promising light.

“The pilot is cleared for takeoff,” Marcus announced, his deep voice carrying a steady warmth. “Fasten your seatbelts, ladies. We’re heading into a brand-new day.”
