THE GREEN VELVET CONSPIRACY / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the grand ballroom hallway cast a warm, flickering amber glow over the polished mahogany floors and cascading white floral arrangements. It was an atmosphere designed for opulence, yet beneath the veneer of high society, a chilling tension hung heavy in the air. Evelyn Vance, a sixty-year-old blonde woman draped in a striking dark green off-shoulder evening gown, stood rigidly near the heavy archway. Her long black gloves swallowed her forearms, and her manicured fingers gripped a silver tray supporting a single crystal glass of deep red wine. Her expression was a mask of calculated fury, her jaw tight and her eyes narrowed. Before her stood Arthur Pendelton, the estate manager, shrinking under her glare.

“This is a private gathering,” Evelyn said, her voice dropping to a harsh, controlled hiss that cut through the faint hum of distant string music. “The girls go separately.”

Arthur nodded frantically, stepping back into the shadows. Evelyn did not wait for further acknowledgment; she turned sharply on her heel, her silk gown rustling against the baseboard. Just a few yards down the corridor, Marcus Sterling, a towering forty-year-old Black man in a tailored black tuxedo and crisp bowtie, walked beside Maya Lin, a fifty-year-old Black woman wearing a matching dark green off-shoulder evening gown. Maya’s composure was absolute, an island of calm in a sea of impending chaos. As they reached the intersection leading to the private terrace, Maya stopped abruptly. She withdrew a sleek smartphone from a hidden pocket within the heavy folds of her dress, her thumb swiping across the glass with practiced precision.

Maya brought the device to her ear, her dark eyes scanning the empty corridor to ensure privacy. The ambient noise of the party faded into a distant murmur as the connection went through. She looked intensely at the screen, her breathing shallow and controlled, refusing to let any external pressure alter her demeanor.

“It’s me,” Maya spoke softly into the receiver, her voice carrying a steely undertone that brooked no argument. “Proceed as planned.”

Across the hallway, leaning against a marble pillar, stood Charles Vance, a sixty-year-old silver-haired man distinguished in a classic black tuxedo. Charles lowered his gaze to the smartphone glowing in his palm, reading a silent notification that changed the trajectory of the entire evening. As he looked up, Evelyn approached him with brisk, agitated steps, the wine in her glass barely sloshing despite her sudden movement.

“Charles, what happened?” Evelyn demanded, her composure fracturing slightly as she confronted her husband.

Charles stared down at his phone, his expression shifting from mild distraction to profound concern. Intense tension filled the hallway, silencing even the whisper of the wind against the tall French doors. The plan had been set into motion, and there was no turning back.
