Chapter 5

Deep beneath the historic mansion, far removed from the glittering chandeliers and polite laughter of the ballroom, lay the subterranean archive. Built during the Prohibition era as a private vault and communications hub, the windowless concrete room smelled faintly of old paper, damp stone, and ozone.

Charles, Julian, and Maya stood around a heavy steel desk illuminated by a single overhead pendant light. Maya’s laptop was plugged directly into an offline terminal, its screen casting a cool blue glow across her serious face. Lines of encrypted data scrolled down the display at a blinding pace.

“The transfer is ninety percent complete,” Maya announced without looking up from the screen. “Once the final block clears, the entire endowment fund will be legally partitioned into an independent trust managed by the beneficiaries—Clara and Sofia. Neither Evelyn nor the board can touch it, freeze it, or tax it.”

Julian leaned against a filing cabinet, crossing his arms over his chest. A cynical smile touched the corners of his mouth. “And what happens to us, Maya? When the federal auditors realize the vault is empty and the family accounts are dry, they aren't going to look at the girls. They’re going to look for scapegoats. And Charles and I make very convenient targets.”

“You made yourselves targets decades ago, Julian,” Maya said calmly, finally turning her gaze to meet his eyes. “I am simply ensuring that the collateral damage of your greed doesn’t consume the next generation. Clara and Sofia deserve a future unburdened by the debt of this family’s corrupted legacy.”

Charles walked over to the heavy steel door, placing his hand against the cold metal as if he could feel the vibrations of the mansion above them. “She’s right, Julian. We built this house of cards. We don't get to complain when the wind finally knocks it down. My only regret is that we didn't dismantle it ourselves years ago, before it came to this.”

“Speak for yourself, brother,” Julian muttered, looking away. “I rather enjoyed the view from the top.”

“The view was an illusion,” Maya interjected softly, unplugging the flash drive from the terminal and sliding it into her pocket. Her movements were precise, devoid of fear or triumph. “An illusion paid for by the silence of people whose lives were destroyed to pad this foundation’s balance sheet. I spent twenty years watching this family protect its name at the expense of everyone else. Tonight, that ends.”

Marcus’s voice crackled through the secure earpiece Maya wore. “Maya, we have movement on the north perimeter. Two unmarked vehicles just bypassed the outer gate. They’re not local police; federal agents. You need to wrap up down there right now.”

Maya tapped her earpiece twice to signal receipt. She looked at Charles and Julian one last time. “The extraction vehicle is waiting by the greenhouse. If you stay here, you’ll be arrested within ten minutes. If you come with us, you take your chances in the light of day. Choose now.”
