Chapter 12: The Golden Surge

The moment Toby’s fingers touched Cross’s coat, a torrent of blinding golden light erupted. Unlike the gentle warmth he gave to Evelyn or Marcus, this energy burned like a miniature sun, illuminating the entire rail yard and painting the night clouds with fiery amber hues.

Cross gasped as the cellular decay inside his lungs and heart began to reverse at an impossible rate. His breathing cleared, his wrinkled skin tightened, and the heavy iron grip of death lifted from his chest.

But the light did not stop there.

The surge expanded outward like a shockwave, passing through every mercenary standing in the rail yard. Old combat scars vanished, chronic nerve injuries healed, and minds clouded with trauma and cruelty were suddenly overwhelmed by a profound, terrifying wave of pure empathy. Several operatives dropped their weapons, falling to their knees as they felt the crushing weight of their own actions reflected back at them.

When the brilliance finally subsided, Cross stood fully healed, breathing the night air without his respirator. But he was trembling violently, looking at his hands in horror as tears streamed down his face. The physical healing had forced his mind to confront decades of selfishness and greed.
