Chapter 11: The Choice

Cross’s men moved in, pinning Marcus with concentrated suppressing fire. An operative disarmed Marcus with a heavy blow, leaving him pinned against the concrete. Two guards dragged Evelyn away, forcing her to her knees.

Cross walked slowly toward Toby, leaning heavily on a cane. "Come here, boy. Touch my chest. Heal me, and I will give you a kingdom. You will never sleep on the cold streets again."

Toby looked at Marcus, then at Evelyn, who was fighting against the guards' grip with tears streaming down her face.

"Don't do it, Toby!" Evelyn cried. "He will use you until there's nothing left!"

Toby didn't look at Cross with anger or hatred. He looked at the dying billionaire with a deep, sorrowful pity.

"You're very sick," Toby said softly, his voice cutting through the wind. "Not just in your body. In your heart. You hurt everyone because you're scared of being alone in the dark."

Cross flinched, his cold exterior cracking for a split second before rage took over. "Heal me! That is an order!"

Toby took a deep breath, stepped forward, and placed both hands over Cross’s failing heart.
