Chapter 8 - The Crimson Alarms

The shrill, piercing wail of the estate’s security system cut through the quiet air of the nursery like a serrated blade. Red emergency strobe lights began to pulse rhythmically along the baseboards of the second-floor hallway, casting an unnatural, bloody tint over the antique portraits lining the walls.

Marcus spun around, his weapon raised, his tactical instincts overriding the initial shock of the breach.

"Perimeter breach at the West Gate," Lucas shouted, pulling his ruggedized tablet from his tactical vest and swiping rapidly across the glowing screen. "The main vehicle barrier was just rammed by a heavy utility truck. They're trying to draw our security detail away from the main house."

David stepped out onto the second-floor landing, leaning over the wrought-iron banister to scan the expansive foyer below.

"It's a diversion," David called down to Marcus. "They want us looking at the gates while someone slips out through the subterranean service tunnels with the physical ledger."

Elena gripped the doorframe of the nursery, her knuckles turning white as the flashing red lights reflected in her wide eyes. The psychological weight of the past two hours—the confrontation in the foyer, Julian's arrest, the empty vault, and now a coordinated tactical intrusion inside her family home—was pushing her to the absolute brink of endurance.

"They're not trying to steal files, Marcus," Elena said, her voice cutting through the noise of the blaring alarms with startling clarity.

Marcus turned his head, walking briskly out of the nursery to stand beside her on the landing. "What makes you say that, El?"

"Look at the watch," Elena pointed a trembling finger down at the broken timepiece resting in the open gift box on the nursery floor. "My grandfather's watch. It wasn't stolen for its value. It was left here to prove that they can breach any security system we put in place. They aren't running away, Marcus. They're hunting us."

Marcus stared at his sister, seeing the raw, unyielding courage buried beneath her exhaustion. He nodded once, his jaw set in a hard, uncompromising line.

"Lucas, override the local alarm grid and switch the cameras to infrared," Marcus commanded, his voice carrying the absolute authority of a commanding officer. "David, secure the perimeter doors. Nobody leaves this house, and nobody comes in without our authorization."

"Copy that," Lucas and David chorused, moving with swift, synchronized efficiency down the hallway toward the master control suite.

Marcus turned his full attention back to Elena, gently placing his hands on her shoulders.

"We need to get you down to the safe room in the basement," Marcus said softly, his tone gentler now that they were alone on the landing. "Until we sweep every square inch of this property, you aren't safe out in the open."

Elena shook her head firmly, pulling back just enough to meet her brother's intense gaze.

"No, Marcus. Hiding in a concrete box didn't work for me the last two years," Elena said, her voice steady and resolute. "I spent two years hiding behind closed doors while Julian lied to my face. I am done hiding."

Before Marcus could argue, a sudden, violent crash echoed from the ground floor—the sound of heavy glass shattering near the conservatory at the far end of the west wing.

Marcus dropped his hand from Elena's shoulder, his weapon instantly leveling toward the stairwell.

"Stay behind me," Marcus ordered, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper as he began to descend the stairs into the flashing red gloom of the foyer.
