Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Sub-Level

The sharp chime of the security console echoed through the grand foyer, dying out against the high stone walls and leaving behind an oppressive, metallic tension. Marcus drew his sidearm with a smooth, practiced motion, the cold steel catching the dim light filtering through the arched windows. David and Lucas immediately flanked him, their own hands dropping instinctively to their concealed holsters.
"Elena, stay here by the heavy pillars," Marcus ordered without turning around, his eyes locked on the dark archway leading to the basement stairs. "Do not move, and do not make a sound."
Elena clutched her rounded belly, her chest heaving as she nodded mutely. She backed away until her spine pressed firmly against the cool marble of the main structural column, her breathing shallow and controlled. The fear that had paralyzed her earlier was rapidly being replaced by a fierce, maternal survival instinct.
Marcus took the lead, descending the winding stone steps into the subterranean sub-level with absolute silence. The air down here was noticeably cooler, smelling faintly of ozone and damp earth. The emergency red backup lighting cast long, bleeding shadows down the narrow corridor that housed the estate's primary server racks.
At the far end of the hallway, a soft, rhythmic clicking sound reached their ears—the distinctive clack of a mechanical keyboard moving at high speed.
Marcus raised his left hand, signaling for David and Lucas to fan out and take positions on either side of the heavy reinforced steel door of the server room. The door stood ajar by a few inches, a thin sliver of pale blue monitor light spilling out onto the concrete floor.
Marcus counted down silently with three fingers, then two, then one.
With a swift, powerful kick, Marcus slammed his boot against the reinforced steel. The door flew inward, crashing hard against the drywall with a thunderous bang.
"Federal agents! Don't move!" Marcus roared, sweeping his weapon into the room.
The server room was bathed in the harsh, flickering glow of half a dozen massive liquid-cooled mainframes. Rows of blinking green and amber lights pulsed rhythmically against the metal racks. But the room was entirely empty.
Lucas rushed inside, checking the blind spots behind the heavy server stacks while David swept the small utility closet in the corner.
"Clear!" Lucas called out, his voice laced with confusion. "Nobody here."
Marcus lowered his gun slightly, stepping cautiously into the center of the room. The mechanical clicking sound was still echoing off the walls, but it wasn't coming from a person.
On the central workstation console, a high-end mechanical keyboard was wired to a looping macro script, automatically executing a series of terminal commands that were wiping the estate's internal hard drives clean. Next to the keyboard sat a sleek, gold-plated USB flash drive, pulsing with a slow, rhythmic blue LED light.
David walked over to the desk, squinting down at the glowing monitor screen.
"It's a decoy loop," David said, pointing a gloved finger at the cascading lines of code scrolling down the black terminal window. "Whoever was here didn't just wipe the drives—they left a trace."
Marcus holstered his weapon and stepped up to the console. He reached out and plucked the gold-plated USB drive from its port. The moment the metal casing touched his palm, the looping script on the monitor stopped abruptly. The screen flashed black for a split second, then a single line of text appeared in stark white letters: CHECK THE NURSERY.
Marcus stared at the screen, the blood running cold in his veins.
"The nursery," Marcus whispered, the realization hitting him with the force of a physical blow.

Upstairs, in the main house, a single, muffled sound broke the absolute silence—the distinct, heavy thud of a door closing upstairs.
