Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the Nursery

The single word on the monitor—*CHECK THE NURSERY*—sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through Marcus’s nervous system. He turned on his heel, abandoning the server room without a backward glance, sprinting back toward the winding stone steps with David and Lucas hot on his heels.
They burst out of the basement stairwell and into the sunlit foyer, expecting the worst.
Elena was standing exactly where Marcus had left her, her back pressed against the marble pillar, her chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow gasps. She looked up at them with wide, terrified eyes, pointing a trembling finger toward the grand curved staircase leading to the second-floor living quarters.
"Someone... someone just walked past the landing," Elena whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the estate's ventilation system. "I heard footsteps on the hardwood."
Marcus didn't hesitate. He vaulted up the staircase two steps at a time, his brothers surging up behind him like a well-oiled tactical unit. The second-floor hallway stretched out before them, lined with antique portraits and heavy oak doors leading to the private family suites.
The door to the nursery—the room Elena had spent the last three months carefully preparing, painting soft pastel blues and whites, stocking with cribs and hand-knitted blankets—stood wide open. A cool draft poured out from the open window, fluttering the sheer white curtains against the glass.
Marcus raised his weapon, sweeping across the threshold into the sunlit room.
The nursery was pristine, untouched, save for one chilling detail. In the exact center of the white oak floorboards sat a small, wrapped gift box tied with a golden silk ribbon.
David swept the perimeter, checking the walk-in closet and the adjoining bathroom, while Lucas secured the open window, looking out onto the second-story balcony.
"Balcony door was unlocked from the inside," Lucas reported, scanning the ivy-covered trellis that scaled down the exterior stone wall of the mansion. "There are fresh boot prints on the stone ledge. Someone went down that way not thirty seconds ago."
Marcus lowered his gun, walking slowly toward the center of the room where the small gift box rested. He knelt down, his sharp eyes examining the golden silk ribbon. It was the exact same fabric, the exact same weave as the dress Clara had been wearing in the foyer.
"Don't touch it, Marcus," Elena warned softly from the doorway, her hands resting defensively over her belly as she stepped hesitantly into the room. "It could be anything."
"It's a message," Marcus replied grimly. He carefully slipped a pen beneath the golden ribbon, lifting it off the box without using his bare hands. The lid of the small cardboard box drifted open.
Inside lay a single item: an antique silver pocket watch, its crystal face smashed completely into spiderwebs of jagged glass. The hands of the watch were permanently frozen at 3:14.
Elena stared at the broken watch, a sudden, inexplicable shiver running down her spine. She reached out and touched her own neck, her breath catching.
"That's... that's my grandfather's watch," Elena whispered, her voice laced with absolute horror. "The one he kept in the locked wall safe in the study. The safe that required a biometric scan and a six-digit cryptographic pin."
David frowned, walking over to the box and inspecting the battered timepiece. "Julian didn't have the pin. Only you and your father knew the combination."
Elena shook her head slowly, stepping closer to the box as the pieces of the puzzle began to violently collide in her mind.
"Julian didn't have the pin," Elena repeated, her voice dropping to a terrified hum. "Which means whoever broke into the safe... is still inside this house, watching every single move we make."

Before Marcus could issue a command to lock down the estate, a heavy, metallic slam echoed from the hallway below, followed by the sound of the main security alarms screaming to life across the property.
