Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

The sudden appearance of the federal marshals transformed the sunlit foyer into a sterile theater of judgment. Julian’s hands were pulled behind his back with practiced efficiency, the cold bite of steel cuffs snapping shut around his wrists before he could mount any defense. He thrashed instinctively, his white button-down shirt pulling taut across his chest as he glared wildly around the room.
"This is completely illegal!" Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "I demand to speak to my legal counsel! You can't just—this is an abduction!"
Marcus didn't even flinch as Julian struggled. He simply adjusted his cuffs, his gaze as steady as a granite cliff.
"Your legal counsel was picked up by federal agents forty-five minutes ago at his downtown office," Marcus said evenly. "He’s currently cooperating in exchange for a reduced sentence on your money-laundering charges. It turns out loyalty is remarkably cheap when federal prison time is on the table."
Clara watched the scene unfold with a growing sense of horror. The untouchable confidence that had radiated from her golden silk dress began to fracture, revealing the desperate panic underneath. She took a sharp step toward the marshals, her voice pitching upward in hysteria.
"You can't touch me!" Clara shrieked, pointing at Marcus. "I have nothing to do with his corporate accounts! I am an independent consultant! My assets are entirely separate!"
The third man in the suit—the one who had dropped the velvet box—stepped into Clara’s path, blocking her exit. He pulled a thick sheaf of documents from his inner pocket and flipped them open.
"Miss Clara Vance," the man said, his tone entirely devoid of emotion. "Principal shareholder of shell corporation Horizon Holdings, funded exclusively by embezzled funds from the Henderson Trust—which happens to be Elena’s maternal inheritance."
Clara’s jaw dropped. She looked from the documents to Julian, her eyes wide with betrayal.
"You said those funds were clean," Clara whispered, her voice cracking. "You swore to me the Henderson trust was untouchable."
Julian refused to meet her eyes, staring stubbornly at the marble floor between his feet.
Elena stood quietly a few feet away, her hands still resting protectively over her pregnant belly. She watched the two people who had conspired against her crumble under the weight of their own greed. There was no triumph in her expression, only a profound, hollow exhaustion.
"Julian," Elena said softly, breaking the tense silence of the room.
Julian snapped his head up, hope momentarily flaring in his dark eyes, believing she might finally show him mercy.
"Elena, please," Julian begged, his voice dropping to a desperate plea. "Tell them this is a mistake. We can fix this. We have a baby on the way. Think of our child."
Elena took a slow breath, the memory of his hand striking her cheek burning fresh in her mind.
"I am thinking of our child," Elena replied steadily. "That is why I gave Marcus the ledger three days ago."
Julian stared at her, the final piece of the puzzle snapping into place with devastating clarity. He hadn't been ambushed by strangers; he had been dismantled by the very woman he thought he had completely controlled.
Before Julian could utter another word, Marcus signaled the marshals toward the side exit.
"Take them both down through the secure subterranean garage," Marcus ordered. "I want them processed before the press arrives."

As the marshals hauled Julian away, his feet dragging across the pristine floor, the heavy oak doors swung open to reveal a swarm of flashing cameras and shouting reporters gathered at the bottom of the grand stone steps outside.
