Chapter 8: Approaching Oak Ridge

The unmarked federal SUV bounced down the unpaved gravel access road leading toward the sprawling expanse of Oak Ridge Park. Through the windshield, the rusted corrugated metal warehouses loomed against the overcast midday sky like monolithic skeletons of a bygone industrial era. Tall chain-link fences topped with coiled barbed wire surrounded the property, broken only by a heavy iron security gate currently manned by a single guard booth.
Miller cut the headlights and rolled the vehicle to a stop behind a dense thicket of overgrown pine trees about three hundred yards from the entrance. He reached into the glove compartment, pulled out a pair of high-powered military binoculars, and adjusted the focus on the main administration building at the center of the complex.
"They've got a perimeter watch," Miller muttered, lowering the binoculars. "Two guards by the gatehouse, and a patrol vehicle making rounds every fifteen minutes."
Elena peered through the passenger window, her palms sweating against her jeans. The rain had stopped, leaving behind a heavy, humid mist that clung to the weeds. "Can we bypass the gate?"
"There's a drainage culvert on the western fence line," Miller said, pulling a tactical vest over his shoulders and checking the clip of his sidearm. "It leads right into the basement of the main building. That’s my entry point."
"I'm coming with you," Elena stated, reaching for the door handle.
"No, Elena," Miller said, turning to look her directly in the eyes. "My job is to secure the perimeter and rescue your brother. Your job is to keep that gold pendant safe and make sure Leo has someone waiting for him if this goes wrong. Do not compromise this operation."

Before Elena could argue further, Miller slipped out of the passenger door and melted silently into the brush, blending into the gray brushwood with the practiced efficiency of a veteran investigator.
Elena sat alone in the idling SUV, the silence inside the cabin deafening. She looked down at the gold pendant resting on the passenger seat, its polished surface reflecting the pale light filtering through the clouds. She thought of Leo back home, drawing pictures of his father at the kitchen table, asking when Daddy was coming home. She could not just sit here and wait for fate to decide her family's future.
