Chapter 6: The Unlikely Ally

Standing alone on the wet sidewalk as the rain began to fall harder, Elena felt a wave of frustration wash over her. She had let Clara slip through her fingers again, but this time, she had confirmation of something vital: Clara was not acting alone. The man in the black sedan—likely Marcus Vance or one of his corporate enforcers—was directly tied to her movements.
Elena returned to her car, turning the heater on high as she shivered from the damp cold. Her phone buzzed on the passenger seat. It was an unknown number calling from a local prefix. She hesitated for a moment before swiping the screen to answer.
"Hello?"
"Ms. Vance? No, apologies, Ms. Mercer," a raspy, older male voice spoke on the other end of the line. "I believe we have a mutual acquaintance. Or rather, we are both looking for the same man."
Elena gripped the steering wheel tightly. "Who is this?"
"My name is Agent Miller. Federal Bureau of Investigation, White Collar Division. I’ve been tracking Marcus Vance’s shell companies for over two years. Your brother David tried to hand us the evidence six months ago before he went off the radar. We’ve been looking for his files ever since."
Elena’s breath caught in her throat. "You're real? The police department told me there was no federal investigation."
"Local police departments can be influenced by large corporate donations, Ms. Mercer. Vance Corporation has deep pockets in this city," Miller said grimly. "Meet me in twenty minutes at the diner on 4th and Elm. Come alone, and bring the gold pendant."
Twenty minutes later, Elena slid into the vinyl booth of the brightly lit, retro diner. The smell of frying bacon and strong coffee hung thick in the air. Across the table sat an older man with thinning gray hair, wearing a rumpled trench coat and holding a ceramic mug between his calloused hands. He looked tired, with deep lines etched around his eyes that spoke of years fighting bureaucratic corruption.
"You have the pendant?" Miller asked quietly, keeping his voice beneath the hum of the diner's exhaust fan.

Elena reached into her pocket, withdrew the heavy gold locket, and placed it gently on the formica table. "I found the microcode inside. It led me to the affidavit. But Clara just retrieved something from the bus terminal locker an hour ago. She had help from a man in a black sedan."
Miller leaned forward, inspecting the locket with professional curiosity before looking up at Elena. "That sedan belongs to Marcus Vance’s chief of security. They are moving their assets offshore, Ms. Mercer. Which means they are preparing to skip the country. If we don't intercept them within the next forty-eight hours, your brother’s evidence—and possibly your brother himself—will vanish permanently."
