Chapter 12: The Journey Home

The afternoon sun was breaking through the heavy cloud cover as Elena’s car pulled back into the driveway of her suburban home. In the passenger seat sat David, wrapped in a warm wool blanket, staring out the window at the familiar maple trees lining the street as if seeing them for the first time in a decade.

The weight of the past six months felt lighter now, replaced by the quiet, surreal relief of survival.

Elena parked the car and turned off the ignition. She turned to her brother, a gentle smile on her lips. "Are you ready?"

David nodded, taking a deep breath of the autumn air. "More than ready."

They walked up the paved walkway together, the gravel crunching softly beneath their shoes. Before they could reach the front porch, the front door swung open, and young Leo burst out onto the steps.

The boy stopped dead in his tracks. His bruised eye was healing into a faint yellowish hue, but his mouth hung open in absolute disbelief. He looked from Elena to the thin, bearded man standing beside her.

"Daddy?" Leo whispered, his voice trembling on the edge of a sob.

David dropped to his knees on the welcome mat, opening his arms wide. "Hey, buddy. I'm home."

Leo didn't hesitate. He launched himself off the porch stairs, throwing his arms around his father’s neck and burying his face in David’s shoulder. The tears that followed were not of fear or confusion, but of pure, unadulterated joy. Elena stood beside them, watching the embrace with tears of her own shining in her eyes, her hand resting over the gold pendant still tucked safely in her pocket.
