Chapter 7 - The Sniper in the Courtyard

Mr. Reed froze mid-stride, his hand hovering over the pocket of his trench coat. Elena caught the subtle shift in his posture instantly, her eyes darting to the window where the smart-glass had just cleared.

"Down!" Elena screamed, lunging forward and tackling the older man to the floor just as a high-caliber bullet shattered the reinforced windowpane, sending a jagged storm of glass shards whistling through the air to embed themselves deeply into the oak bookshelf behind them.

The heavy, suppressed crack of a rifle shot echoed from the distant tree line across the estate's sprawling lawn.

"Sniper!" one of the federal marshals yelled from the hallway, diving back into the study with his rifle raised, scanning the dark expanse of the courtyard through the shattered window. "Active shooter in the south treeline! Secure the perimeter!"

Henderson, still pinned to the floor in his zip-ties, let out a harsh, mocking laugh from the corner of the room.

"You idiots really thought Julian was the top of the food chain, didn't you?" Henderson sneered, blood trickling from a small cut on his forehead. "There are people above Julian who make billionaires look like cashiers. You think they're just going to let you walk away with the ledgers?"

Mr. Reed pushed himself up from the floor, his breathing slightly elevated but his composure entirely intact. He brushed a stray piece of glass from his sleeve and looked down at Henderson with cold disdain.

"Tell your anonymous masters in the shadows that the Reed family has been burying mercenaries since before they learned how to incorporate shell companies," Mr. Reed said quietly, signaling to the lead marshal. "Get him out of here through the sub-basement freight elevator. Do not use the main courtyard."

Elena stood up, walking cautiously to the shattered window. She peered out into the freezing night, her eyes scanning the dark shadows of the manicured hedges and the distant tree line where the muzzle flash had originated. The red laser dot was gone, replaced by the sweeping beam of a security drone hovering silently above the treeline.

"That wasn't a warning shot," Elena whispered, her fingers tracing the jagged edge of the broken glass. "That was a professional elimination attempt. They wanted you dead before we reached the federal magistrate."

Mr. Reed walked up beside her, placing a steady hand on her shoulder.

"They panicked, Elena. That means we found the central vault. The sniper didn't come from Julian's payroll. That came from the shadow board that funded the merger thirty years ago—the people who actually orchestrated your father's downfall."

Elena turned her head to look at him, her eyes burning with a fierce, dangerous intelligence.

"Then we change our destination," Elena said firmly. "We don't go to the magistrate. We go straight to the federal archive mainframe in downtown Washington. If the shadow board wants to play war, we give them a full-scale forensic audit."

Before Mr. Reed could answer, the encrypted tablet in Elena's hand buzzed violently, flashing a red warning alert across the screen. An unknown sender had accessed her personal medical file, appending a single, chilling sentence to the bottom of the document: The bride’s bouquet is still waiting for her at the cemetery.
