Chapter 6 - The Breach at Midnight

The flashbang grenade detonated in the hallway with a concussive shockwave that rattled the windowpanes and blew out the antique wall sconces, sending a shower of hot glass across the Persian rug. Henderson dropped his pistol, instinctively raising his hands to shield his ears as he stumbled backward into a mahogany bookshelf, knocking down a row of leather-bound encyclopedias.
Before Henderson could recover his weapon, two federal marshals in heavy tactical armor surged through the doorway, their carbines leveled dead at his chest.
"Down on the floor! Hands behind your head! Do it now!" the lead marshal bellowed, his voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls.
Henderson, realizing the futility of resistance, dropped slowly to his knees, interlacing his fingers behind his skull as a heavy zip-tie bit painfully into his wrists.
Julian stood paralyzed behind the desk, watching his empire evaporate in real time. He didn't run. He didn't scream. He simply stared at the federal badge pinned to the lead marshal's tactical vest as if it were an apparition from a nightmare.
"Julian Vance," the lead marshal said, stepping forward and clamping a cold pair of steel handcuffs around the billionaire's wrists with a definitive click. "You are under arrest for corporate espionage, wire fraud, conspiracy, and the wrongful imprisonment of a federal witness. You have the right to remain silent."
"This is a mistake," Julian muttered mechanically, his voice hollow as he was spun around and forced toward the doorway. "My lawyers... the Senate Judiciary Committee... they won't let this stand."
"Your lawyers were picked up by the SEC twenty minutes ago while trying to board a private flight to Zurich," the marshal replied flatly, shoving Julian forward past the threshold.
Elena stood motionless in the center of the study, watching the man who had tormented her for three agonizing years being marched out of the room in handcuffs. The white strapless wedding gown that had felt like a straitjacket a mere hour ago now felt light, almost weightless, as if she were shedding layers of heavy armor.
Mr. Reed stepped into the smoke-filled study, his dark trench coat swept back as he walked with a steady, unhurried pace. He looked around the ancestral room, his eyes lingering on the half-melted wall safe and the scattered papers on the floor.
"It's over, my dear," Mr. Reed said softly, stopping a few feet away from her. "The board has officially voted to dissolve the Vance-Reed merger, retroactive to the date of your marriage. Legally, you are no longer a Vance. You are once again the sole trustee of the Reed estate."
Elena let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension that had gripped her spine all evening finally beginning to ease.
"And Cassandra?" Elena asked quietly, her eyes fixed on the empty hallway where Julian had disappeared.
Mr. Reed’s expression darkened slightly.
"Cassandra tried to flee through the service elevators with three million dollars in bearer bonds from the downstairs safe. The local police intercepted her in the underground parking garage. She's currently sitting in the back of a squad car, screaming about her constitutional rights to anyone who will listen."
Elena reached up, unpinning the elaborate blonde updo that had kept her hair constrained in a rigid, formal style for the wedding. She shook her head, letting her blonde hair fall in loose, natural waves around her shoulders.
"Good," Elena said, turning toward the window where the smart-glass was finally beginning to clear, revealing the flashing red and blue lights of the motorcade waiting below. "Let's go home, Mr. Reed. There's an empty chair at my father' waiting room that needs a proper memorial."
May you like
As they turned to leave the study, a small red laser dot flickered across Mr. Reed's chest, stopping dead over his heart.
