Chapter 2 - The Briefcases of Reckoning

The sudden appearance of the security team silenced the ballroom faster than a gunshot. The string quartet stopped mid-measure, the lead violinist's bow hovering awkwardly over the strings. Julian Vance froze on the stage, his champagne glass halfway to his mouth, the arrogant smirk completely draining from his face as he recognized the insignia pinned to the lapels of the lead guard. It was not his private security detail. It was the federal enforcement seal of the Vance-Reed Global Asset Commission.
Cassandra Vance dropped her microphone, the feedback screeching through the speakers like a dying animal before she caught it, her fingers trembling.
"What is the meaning of this?" Cassandra demanded, stepping forward to block the path of the lead guard, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to project authority. "This is a private wedding reception. You have no jurisdiction here without a direct gubernatorial writ."
The lead guard, a scarred veteran named Miller, did not even break his stride. He bypassed Cassandra as if she were a piece of stray furniture, walking straight up the wooden steps of the stage and coming to a dead halt two feet away from Julian.
"Mr. Julian Vance," Miller said, his voice flat, devoid of any human emotion. "By order of the Special Master, pursuant to Article Nine of the 2018 corporate merger agreement, all assets held by Vance-Reed Industries are hereby frozen pending an immediate forensic audit for systemic fraud and asset misappropriation. Open the stage vault."
Julian lowered his glass, setting it down so hard on a cocktail tray that the crystal stem snapped, spilling champagne across the silver linen. His face turned a dangerous shade of mottled crimson.
"You must be out of your absolute mind," Julian snarled, taking a threatening step toward Miller. "I am the majority shareholder. I am the sole architect of this empire. My lawyers will have your badge before the hour is out. Get these thugs out of my venue right now."
Miller did not blink. He simply nodded to the two guards flanking him, who immediately unclipped their heavy metal briefcases, setting them down on the edge of the stage with a dull, heavy thud that rattled the microphones.
"You haven't checked your encrypted server logs in the last twenty minutes, have you, Mr. Vance?" Miller asked quietly, pulling a thick stack of printed financial ledgers from his coat pocket. "Your daughter-in-law didn't just walk out. She executed the master override code from the bridal suite terminal thirty seconds before she left the room. The moment you demanded those keys, the system verified coercion under duress. The Cassandra Clause is active. Everything you own now legally belongs to the oversight trust."
Cassandra shrieked from the side of the stage, rushing forward and trying to swat the ledgers out of Miller’s hands.
"That's a lie! That girl is a penniless nobody we picked off the street to clean up our public image! She doesn't have the clearance for a master override!"
"She is a licensed forensic accountant and the sole surviving heir to the Reed banking fortune that your family embezzled thirty years ago," Miller said, his voice cutting through Cassandra's hysteria like a razor. He flipped open the top ledger, revealing page after page of offshore account numbers and forged signatures. "And right now, she is sitting in a black SUV outside, watching you lose everything."

Julian stared at the open ledgers, the blood entirely draining from his face, leaving him looking suddenly frail, old, and cornered. The golden lock on the white gift box downstairs suddenly felt less like a trophy and more like a ticking bomb.
