Chapter 8 - Tactical Breach

"Down on the ground! Do it now! Hands where we can see them!" the lead tactical officer roared, sweeping his weapon across the kitchen.

The bright tactical flashlights mounted on their rifles cut through the dim kitchen lighting, blinding Mark as he scrambled backward from his chair. Elena screamed, dropping to the linoleum and pulling little Lily down with her to shield the child's body. Leo dove beneath the wooden kitchen table, his green hoodie blending into the shadows as he curled into a tight protective ball.

Arthur Vance immediately pulled out an official badge, holding it high above his head while stepping away from the basement door. "Stand down! Federal investigator Vance, badge number four-zero-eight! I am already on site!"

The lead tactical officer lowered his rifle slightly, eyeing Vance with intense suspicion. "Vance? Command lost your signal fifteen minutes ago. We tracked your vehicle's backup ping to this address. Who called in the raid?"

"Nobody called in a raid," Vance replied sharply, holstering his badge. "This is an active containment operation regarding domestic endangerment and financial fraud."

"Negative, sir," another tactical officer spoke up, tapping the side of his helmet headset. "We received an automated distress signal originating from inside the house router. The encryption protocol matches a federal asset flag. Someone inside this room just triggered a high-level security lockdown."

Mark slowly pushed himself up from the floor, his hands raised in surrender. His eyes darted around the chaotic scene. Elena was sobbing softly on the floor, holding Lily. His father had retreated back into the dark basement, slamming the heavy wooden door shut. And Leo was peering out from under the table, his young face completely devoid of fear, staring directly at the tactical gear worn by the armed men.

"It wasn't me," Mark said, his voice raspy and exhausted. "None of us called the feds. We were just... arguing."

"Arguments don't trigger server wipes, Mr. Evans," the lead tactical officer said, stepping closer to Mark and slapping a pair of heavy zip-ties around his wrists. The plastic bit into his skin with a sharp, unforgiving bite. "You're coming with us for questioning regarding corporate embezzlement, obstruction of justice, and unlawful detainment."

"Wait, you can't arrest him! He didn't know!" Elena cried out from the floor, struggling to stand up. "I'm the one who managed the accounts! I'm the one who kept his father down there!"

"Mrs. Evans, stay where you are," Vance intervened coldly. "Your husband's signature authorized every single transfer. Ignorance is not a legal defense."

Mark didn't fight back. As the officers hauled him toward the front door, he caught one last glimpse of the kitchen table. The two golden keys were still resting side by side next to Lily's empty ceramic bowl, glittering under the harsh overhead light like a twisted monument to everything he had destroyed.
