Chapter 10 - The Digital Architect

The numbers on the printed screenshot stared back at Mark like a damning verdict. Device ID: Tablet-LG-10. Registered owner: Leo Evans.
"My son?" Mark whispered, shaking his head in absolute denial. "That's impossible. He's ten years old. He plays video games and builds blocks. He doesn't know how to wipe a federal server!"
"You'd be surprised what children learn when they spend their formative years watching their parents tear each other apart behind closed doors," Arthur Vance said calmly, closing the manila folder with a soft thud. "Leo didn't just lock the pantry to keep Lily in line. He learned how to manipulate our domestic surveillance system six months ago. He's been watching all of us."
Mark felt a wave of nausea roll through his stomach. The image of Leo standing silently by the kitchen table, dropping the golden key next to the empty bowl, flashed vividly in his mind. It wasn't the act of a scared child; it was the calculated move of a mastermind pulling the strings of his own broken household.
"Why would he do that?" Mark choked out, tears finally breaking free and spilling down his cheeks. "He's just a little boy. Why would he hack federal databases?"
"To keep you all trapped," Vance replied bluntly. "If the family stays broken, dysfunctional, and isolated, nobody leaves. Children of volatile households often create elaborate control mechanisms to prevent abandonment. By locking the pantry, hiding his grandfather in the basement, and manipulating our investigative files, Leo ensured that his family could never be torn apart by outsiders—because he was holding all the keys."
Before Mark could process the horrifying psychological depth of his son's actions, the heavy steel door of the interrogation room swung open violently. A young tactical officer rushed in, looking pale and out of breath, whispering urgently into Arthur Vance's ear.
Vance's expression instantly drained of color. He stood up so fast his metal chair screeched loudly against the concrete floor.
"What is it?" Mark demanded, standing up as far as the bolted handcuffs would allow. "What happened?"

"The perimeter sensors at your house just tripped again," Vance said, staring at Mark with a mixture of shock and dread. "Your wife and daughter... they've vanished. And the only thing left on the kitchen table is a third golden key."
