Chapter 1 - The Hollow Echo

"I'm sorry, I won't do it again," four-year-old Lily whispered. Her small blonde head was bowed low over the wooden kitchen table, staring intently at the white ceramic bowl. It was completely empty, catching the harsh fluorescent light overhead. Her lower lip trembled just a fraction, a fragile sign of deep terror.
Mark stood frozen by the doorway, his light blue button-down shirt wrinkled from a grueling day at the office. The heavy blue canvas bag slipped from his shoulder, hitting the linoleum floor with a dull thud. His eyes darted from the empty bowl to his wife, Elena, who stood stiffly behind the table in her white blouse. Her expression was a mask of cold, terrifying detachment.
"Why's your bowl empty?" Mark demanded, his voice cracking with sudden fury as he crossed the room and dropped heavily to his knees beside Lily. He grabbed the edge of the table, his knuckles turning stark white.
"The pantry gets locked sometimes," Lily muttered, her voice shaking uncontrollably as she refused to make eye contact with either of them.
Mark spun around to face his wife, his jaw tight with rage. "Elena, what the hell is wrong with you? Why is her bowl empty? Why is the pantry locked?"
"Keep your voice down," Elena hissed, stepping forward into the light. "You have no idea what it takes to run this house while you're drowning yourself in work downtown."
"Don't you dare gaslight me!" Mark shouted, standing up abruptly. "Starving our daughter is not running a house, it's abuse!"
"You think this is about cruelty?" Elena fired back, her eyes flashing with a desperate, hidden panic. "You think I want to do this?"

Before Mark could answer, a shadow fell over the table. Leo, their ten-year-old son wearing a faded green hoodie, stepped out from the darkened hallway. His face was entirely devoid of warmth. Without a single word, he reached into his front pocket, pulled out a small, intricately carved golden key, and dropped it with a sharp metallic clink right next to Lily's empty bowl. Mark stared down at the key, his breath catching in his throat as the horrifying realization hit him that Leo was the one holding the lock and chain.
