Chapter 7 - The Second Key

The second golden key spun through the air like a silver-handled bullet before striking Mark squarely in the chest and clattering onto the floorboards. Mark looked down at the gleaming brass piece lying beside his shoe, his mind spinning out of control. Two identical keys. Two locked truths hidden beneath the polished veneer of his suburban life.
"You think you're the victim here, don't you, boy?" Arthur Evans snarled from the bottom of the basement stairs, his weathered hands gripping the wooden handrail. "Working fifty hours a week to escape the rot you built with your own hands! You put me down here to rot, just like you're starving your own daughter to punish your wife!"
"Shut up!" Mark screamed, lunging toward the basement door, but Arthur Vance grabbed his shoulder, pulling him back with surprising strength.
"Mr. Evans, stay back. That man is unstable," Vance warned, his professional demeanor finally cracking under the weight of the unfolding chaos.
"Unstable? He's my father!" Mark yelled, shaking off the investigator's grip. "And you people have been keeping him locked in a basement like an animal while my wife and children play house upstairs?"
"We didn't have a choice," Elena cried out, tears finally streaming down her face as she clutched little Lily tighter against her chest. "If we sent him to a facility, the financial audit would have exposed the embezzlement. Your embezzlement, Mark!"
Mark froze. The word hung in the air like a physical blow. "My... what?"
"The corporate funds," Elena said, her voice hollow and broken. "The reason you work sixty hours a week isn't for a promotion. It's because your company's forensic accountants have been tracking missing capital for six months. You've been paying off your father's massive gambling debts using company accounts without even realizing it, because you were too drunk and exhausted to read the quarterly statements!"
Mark staggered backward, his knees buckling until he hit the kitchen chair. The empty bowl on the table seemed to mock him, a symbol of the emptiness inside his own soul. He looked up at Leo in his green hoodie, then at his frail father in the basement, and finally at Elena. Every lie, every secret, every locked door was tied directly back to his own blind ignorance.

Before Mark could process the confession, the front door of the house was violently kicked open with a thunderous crash. Three armed men in dark tactical gear swarmed into the hallway, their weapons raised, shouting commands for everyone to get on the floor.
