Chapter 9 - The Penthouse Ascent

The private elevator of the Century City obsidian tower moved with terrifying speed, shooting up forty floors in mere seconds. Maddie stood alone in the mirrored cabin, her reflection framed by the gold sequins of her ruined gown, which she had stubbornly refused to change out of. It was her war paint.
The digital floor indicator chimed softly: 42.
The doors slid open with a pneumatic hiss, revealing an expansive, minimalist penthouse suite that overlooked the sprawling expanse of Los Angeles under a gray morning fog. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows framed the horizon, while polished concrete floors reflected the stark overhead halogen lights.
Standing by the massive marble wet bar was Victor Sterling himself—a tall, silver-haired man in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, swirling amber liquor in a heavy crystal glass. Bradley sat nearby on a modern leather sofa, sweating profusely, his head buried in his hands. Two heavy-set men in identical dark suits flanked the private elevator entrance behind her.
"Maddie. Welcome," Sterling said, his voice smooth, cultured, and dripping with condescension. He didn't turn around immediately, taking a slow sip of his drink before facing her. "I must admit, you're harder to track down than a stray cat in an alley. Impressive persistence."
Maddie didn't flinch. She stepped out of the elevator, letting the doors close behind her with a definitive thud. "Save the charm, Victor. I didn't come here to negotiate terms. I came to watch you sign your own indictment."
Bradley jerked his head up, his face pale and twisted with horror. "Maddie, shut up! You have no idea what you're dealing with! Mr. Sterling can make all of this go away!"
Sterling smiled, a cold, predatory stretching of his lips that didn't reach his eyes. He set his glass down on the marble counter and turned fully toward her. "Bradley is right, my dear. You are vastly outmatched. You hold a flash drive containing proprietary corporate data that you obtained illegally. If you leave this room without signing our NDA, my security team will detain you for industrial espionage, and by nightfall, you'll be facing twenty years in a federal penitentiary."
One of the bodyguards stepped forward, cracking his knuckles with deliberate menace.
Maddie smiled, reaching into her pocket and pulling out a small, unassuming black device. "You assume I'm relying on local courts, Victor. But while we've been talking, my lead engineer just initiated a global decentralized torrent release of every financial record, shell company routing slip, and offshore ledger you own."
Sterling’s smile faltered for a microsecond. His eyes darted to Bradley in sudden, silent fury.

"And," Maddie continued, stepping closer, her voice echoing in the vast room, "the live audio feed of this entire conversation is currently streaming directly to every major news outlet in North America."
