Chapter 10 - The Digital Echo

The silence in the penthouse was absolute, save for the faint hum of the building's central climate control system. Victor Sterling’s calculated composure cracked for a fraction of a second, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure venom as he stared at Maddie. He didn't believe her bluff—until his own encrypted corporate smartphone buzzed violently in his breast pocket.
Sterling pulled the phone out with a slow, deliberate movement, his gaze never leaving Maddie’s face. He tapped the screen, scrolling through a rapidly updating notification feed. Color drained from his weathered cheeks, leaving him looking suddenly ancient.
"Sir," one of the heavy-set bodyguards muttered, his own earpiece crackling with urgent chatter from downstairs. "Our IT desk is reporting massive outbound data packets hitting decentralized nodes globally. We can't firewall the network; it's bypassing our servers entirely."
Bradley leaped off the leather sofa, stumbling backward against the glass coffee table, sending a crystal ashtray crashing to the floor. "What did you do?" he screamed, pointing a trembling finger at Maddie. "You ruined us! You ruined everything we built!"
"I ruined your criminal enterprise, Bradley," Maddie corrected, her voice ice-cold. "I am simply reclaiming what was stolen."
Sterling lowered his phone, his expression hardening from shock back into a cold, dangerous calculation. He slipped the device back into his jacket pocket and raised his hands in a slow, mocking gesture of surrender.
"Impressive," Sterling said quietly, his voice dangerously smooth. "You played a high-stakes bluff, Ms. Vance. Or perhaps it wasn't a bluff at all. But do you genuinely believe a few leaked spreadsheets will bring down Apex Capital? My legal team will brand you as a disgruntled, unstable ex-partner experiencing a mental breakdown after a messy divorce."
"They can try," Maddie replied, standing her ground. "Especially when the public hears the audio file of you threatening to frame me for espionage."
Before Sterling could signal his bodyguards, the heavy oak double doors at the private emergency stairwell burst open with a resounding crash.
Three federal agents in tactical gear, led by a stern-faced woman in a gray suit badge-out in hand, flooded the penthouse suite, followed closely by Chloe holding a live-streaming tablet.
"Victor Sterling, you are under arrest for securities fraud, international money laundering, and corporate racketeering," the lead agent announced, stepping forward with handcuffs ready.

Sterling didn't move an inch, but his eyes locked onto Maddie with a promise of retribution that made her blood run cold, even as the cuffs clicked around his wrists.
