Chapter 1 - The Descent

The warm chlorine water clung to Maddie’s skin, a heavy contrast to the cool autumn air of the Los Angeles hills. Her shimmering gold sequin gown felt like dead weight, dragging her down as she hauled herself up the metal ladder of the glowing pool. Around her, the backyard party froze. String lights overhead cast a golden, shimmering web across expensive evening wear and plastic red cups. Bradley stood near the outdoor kitchen, his white button-down shirt illuminated by the patio lanterns, looking like a deer caught in high beams.
Bradley stepped forward, his expression shifting from panic to defensive arrogance. "Maybe now you'll think twice before making a scene, Maddie."
Maddie stood dripping wet by the pool tile, her chest heaving not from the swim, but from a rage so pure it tasted like copper. She raised a hand, wiping wet strands of blonde hair back from her face with a deliberate, slow movement. Her eyes locked onto his, burning through the shallow charm he had worn all evening.
"You just crossed the line, Bradley," Maddie said, her voice dropping an octave, cutting through the murmurs of thirty socialites who suddenly found their wine glasses deeply fascinating.
Bradley swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing. He took a half-step back, his face draining of color. "Maddie... Come on, it was a joke. Everyone was laughing."
"Laughing," Maddie repeated, the word tasting like ash.
She reached into the soaked pocket of her ruined designer gown and pulled out a sleek, black metallic object. She held up the car key fob, catching the amber glow of the pool lights on its surface. A collective gasp rose from the background as a woman in a silver dress covered her mouth in absolute shock.
"I've already paid for all of this," Maddie said, her gaze fixed entirely on Bradley with a bitter, terrifying resolution. "And now I'm leaving."
Bradley lunged forward, his hands outstretched in desperation. "Don't you dare take that car, Maddie! That’s corporate property—"
May you like
He didn't finish his sentence because Maddie pressed the panic button, flooding the canyon silence with the piercing, rhythmic honk of his brand-new European sports car, right before she turned and sprinted toward the dark driveway.
