Chapter 14 - The Final Audit

The flickering amber light of a kerosene lamp cast long, dancing shadows across the wooden dining table. The heavy blue leather ledger lay open between them, its yellowed pages filled with intricate, handwritten accounting entries dating back nearly three decades.
"Your father knew Victor Sterling was laundering cartel money through shell real estate portfolios back in the nineties," Thomas explained, his voice heavy with suppressed grief. "He tried to take the evidence to the federal district attorney, but the DA was already on Sterling’s payroll. A week later, his brakes failed on the coastal highway."
Maddie stared at her father’s handwriting, tracing the neat columns of numbers with a trembling finger. Every suspicion she had ever harbored, every unexplained tragedy in her family’s history, snapped into focus like pieces of a dark jigsaw puzzle. Bradley wasn't just a greedy opportunist who happened to cross paths with Sterling; he was a groomed asset, hand-selected to marry into the Vance family and acquire the remaining shares of her father's estate.
"That's why Bradley was so desperate," Chloe murmured, staring at the ledger over Maddie’s shoulder. "It wasn't just about the tech startup. It was about wiping out the Vance lineage completely so no one could ever legally claim the stolen assets."
"Well, they miscalculated," Maddie said, her voice hardening with an absolute, unshakeable resolve. She looked up from the ledger, meeting Thomas and Chloe's eyes with a fierce, burning clarity. "They thought by breaking me at that party, they would shatter my spirit. Instead, they handed me the keys to their entire empire."
"What’s our play, Maddie?" Chloe asked, opening her wet laptop and connecting a secure satellite uplink dish to the windowsill. "If we broadcast this ledger alongside the encrypted financial drive, it implicates half the federal judiciary and three sitting senators."
"We don't broadcast it to the public," Maddie said quietly. "We send a direct, encrypted packet to the one federal prosecutor in Washington who has spent the last ten years trying to build a RICO case against Apex Capital without political interference."
Thomas nodded slowly, a grim smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Agent Miller. An honest cop out of DC. If she gets this physical ledger, jurisdiction shifts from local corrupt courts straight to federal grand jury."
Maddie stood up, closing the heavy blue ledger with a firm thud that echoed in the quiet room. She walked over to the window, watching the storm clouds begin to break over the Pacific, letting the first rays of dawn pierce the darkness.
"Let's make the call," Maddie said.
As Chloe hit send on the encrypted satellite transmission, Maddie’s phone buzzed on the table. A single text message from an unrecognized international number appeared on the screen.
