Chapter 5

Clara stared at Marcus, the words refusing to anchor themselves in her reality. Geneva. Three days ago. That meant Julian had already been gone when she and Julianne had engaged in that explosive argument at the top of the stairs. He hadn't been upstairs hiding; he hadn't been listening in real-time. He had orchestrated the entire trap before he even caught a flight across the Atlantic.
"That's impossible," Clara whispered, shaking her head as she backed away toward the living room entrance. "We had dinner together on Tuesday. We spoke about renovating the guest suite."
"You spoke to an empty house, Clara, or perhaps you were projecting your expectations onto a man who had already checked out of this marriage," Marcus said smoothly, following her into the warm glow of the parlor lamps. He pulled a slim leather folder from his briefcase and laid it flat on the mahogany coffee table. "Julian wasn't just suspicious of your loyalty. He was liquidating his holdings. For the past six months, he has been systematically siphoning funds from joint accounts into offshore accounts managed by Julianne."
Clara stopped in her tracks, her dark dress rustling softly as she turned to face him. "Julianne? That makes no sense. Julianne has been complaining that Julian treats her like an afterthought. She spent the entire evening crying about how he ignores her."
"Julianne is an actress of considerable talent, and a very wealthy one as of this afternoon," Marcus corrected her, opening the folder to reveal a series of wire transfer receipts. "Look at the routing numbers. The money didn't go to Julianne as an individual; it went into a shell corporation registered in the British Virgin Islands. And the sole beneficiary listed on that corporate account is Julianne Hayes—and her silent partner."
Clara leaned over the table, her eyes scanning the financial documents. The numbers were staggering, representing nearly the entirety of the Vance family fortune, accumulated over generations. Julian had not just suspected her of infidelity or malice; he had used her friction with Julianne as a smoke screen to drain their shared wealth while setting Clara up to take the blame for an assault.
"Why?" Clara breathed, the betrayal hitting her with physical force. "Why would he do this to me? We built this life together."

"Because you refused to sign the pre-nuptial amendment last winter," Marcus said quietly, meeting her gaze with unflinching eyes. "Julian wanted absolute control of the estate in the event of a dissolution. You insisted on retaining your independent inheritance rights. So, he engineered a scenario where you would not only be discredited, but legally compromised."
Before Clara could process the full weight of Marcus’s revelation, the heavy front door chimed as it was unlocked from the outside. Detective Miller stepped back into the foyer, accompanied by two officers, holding a warrant signed by a judge.
