Chapter 2

Detective Miller did not rush. Every movement was measured, carrying the weight of institutional authority and quiet confidence. He walked past Julianne without offering a hand to help her up, stepping instead toward the wall where the massive oil painting hung. His eyes were fixed on the golden frame, acknowledging the hidden lens with the nod of a man who already knew every secret wired into the walls of this estate.
Clara remained rooted to the top of the stairs, her black dress feeling suddenly like mourning attire. Her mind churned with a terrifying realization: every harsh word, every bitter accusation she had hurled at Julianne over the past three months had been recorded, framed, and cataloged.
"Who installed that?" Clara demanded, her voice ringing out with controlled indignation as she descended the stairs slowly, keeping her distance from both the detective and her injured sister.
Detective Miller turned his gaze from the painting to Clara. He reached inside his trench coat and produced a small, leather-bound notebook, though he did not open it. "A security system upgrade, Mrs. Vance. Approved by your husband three weeks ago. He was concerned about unauthorized visitors. It seems he was right to be cautious, though perhaps he was watching the wrong person."
Julianne groaned softly from the floor, adjusting her position slightly to cradle her bruised ankle. The performance of distress was just a fraction too polished, a theatricality that Clara recognized intimately from years of sibling rivalry. Yet, the physical injury was real enough; the swelling around Julianne’s ankle was already turning a bruised, angry purple against her pale skin.
"I didn't push her," Clara said, addressing the space between the two of them. She kept her tone level, refusing to sound defensive, though her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. "We were arguing, yes. But she lost her footing. She tripped."
"People rarely just trip when they are being screamed at, Clara," Julianne said from the floor, her whisper carrying a venomous sweetness. She looked up at the detective with wide, mournful green eyes. "She threatened me. You heard it on the feed, didn't you, Detective? She said I ruined everything."

Miller looked between the two women, his expression remaining neutral. He crouched beside Julianne, finally offering assistance by signaling toward the open front doors. Two uniformed officers stepped out of the shadows of the porch, moving quickly to secure the perimeter and fetch a medical kit.
"We have the video, Mrs. Vance," Miller said quietly, standing up to face Clara at eye level. "High-definition audio and visual, streaming directly to a secure local server. Before we jump to conclusions about accidental falls, let's let the evidence speak for itself. But right now, we need to get your sister to a hospital, and we need to have a serious conversation about what is happening inside this house."
