Chapter 12

The heavy double doors of the Vance estate swung open to reveal a house wrapped in silence. Clara stepped into the grand foyer, her footsteps echoing softly against the polished marble floor. The moonlight streamed through the high windows, illuminating the sweeping wooden staircase and the massive oil painting mounted on the dark wainscoting.

She walked up to the wall, standing directly beneath the ornate gold-ornamented frame. With a steady hand, she reached up and found the tiny glass aperture of the hidden camera lens. Using a small jeweler’s screwdriver she had retrieved from her desk at the precinct, she carefully unscrewed the micro-lens module from the acanthus leaf carvings, pulling the small wire free from the wainscoting with a clean snap.

The camera was dead. The red recording light flickered once, then went dark forever.

Clara held the tiny lens in the palm of her hand, feeling its insignificant weight. Julian had spent months watching her through this mechanical eye, turning their marriage into a panopticon of suspicion and control. Now, the eye was blind.

She walked into the library, turning on the amber table lamps to chase away the lingering shadows. The room smelled of old leather and cedarwood. On the mahogany desk sat Julian’s laptop, left behind in his haste to catch the private charter to Geneva. The screen was locked, requiring a biometric scan or a twelve-character password.

Clara didn't need a password. She reached for the antique brass paperweight resting beside the keyboard—a heavy, engraved sphere bearing her family’s crest. She didn't open the laptop. Instead, she pushed the computer aside, clearing the desk to make space for her own papers, her own books, her own future.

The estate belonged to her lineage, rooted in a history that predated Julian’s corporate ambitions by generations. She sat down in the high-backed leather chair, sinking into the cushions that had once felt like a prison, and felt the quiet power of absolute autonomy settle over her shoulders like a warm cloak.
