Chapter 11

The midnight air outside the downtown precinct was crisp and clean, washed by the steady rain that had finally slowed to a gentle mist. Clara stepped through the heavy glass doors of the police station, pulling her dark red shawl tightly around her shoulders. Her black sleeveless dress felt light against the autumn chill, but she didn't feel cold. She felt a profound, crystal-clear clarity that had eluded her for months.
Detective Miller followed her down the concrete steps, holding a manila envelope containing her personal effects.
"Your car is waiting at the curb, Mrs. Vance," Miller said, handing over the envelope with a respectful nod. "The charges against you have been formally dismissed. The prosecutor’s office has already issued a warrant for Julian Vance’s arrest through Interpol channels."
Clara took the envelope, her fingers brushing against the heavy cardstock. "And Julianne?"
"She and Mr. Sterling are currently being booked downstairs," Miller replied, leaning against the handrail. "Julianne is facing charges of filing a false police report, conspiracy to commit fraud, and judicial tampering. Marcus Sterling is cooperating in exchange for a reduced sentence on the financial charges."
Clara looked out toward the empty street, watching the amber streetlights reflect off the wet asphalt. "He really thought he could disappear with everything. He built an entire life out of glass and surveillance, believing he was the only one who knew how the machinery worked."
"People who build glass houses rarely account for the stones they throw themselves," Miller observed quietly. "What are your plans now, Clara?"
"I'm going home," she said, her voice steady and resolute. "Not Julian's house. My house. The estate was in my family long before Julian ever set foot in it with his corporate portfolios and his hidden cameras."

Miller smiled faintly. "If you need a security sweep before you go back inside, let me know. I'm quite familiar with your husband’s handiwork now."
Clara offered a genuine, polite smile in return, stepping down toward the idling car that had been dispatched to take her back. The nightmare was ending, but the work of reclaiming her life was just beginning. She climbed into the backseat of the sedan, watching the city lights blur past as the car headed north toward the estate.
