Chapter 6: The Waking

The second morning broke with soft golden sunlight filtering through the sheer silk curtains of the master bedroom.

Elena stirred, her dark eyelashes fluttering against pale cheeks. The warmth of the room, the clean linen, and the soft scent of lavender were so unfamiliar that she gasped, panicking as her hand flew across the mattress.

""Mia...?"" she choked out, her voice raspy.

""Mia is right here, Elena,"" a deep, steady voice answered.

Elena turned her head. Sitting in an armchair beside the bed was Diego. In his lap sat Mia, fast asleep, wearing a pale blue nightgown and clutching a plush beige bear. Diego was gently brushing a stray lock of hair from his daughter's forehead with a tenderness that looked completely natural on his broad, scarred hands.

Tears welled in Elena’s eyes, spilling silently down her temples onto the pillow. ""Diego...""

""Don't move, sweetheart,"" Diego said softly, rising from the chair while cradling Mia in one arm. He sat on the edge of the mattress, setting Mia gently between them. He reached out with his free hand and gently cupped Elena’s cheek, his thumb catching her tears.

""I didn't take the money, Diego,"" Elena wept, her chest heaving with five years of held breath. ""I swear to you... I tried to find you. Your father told me you had married Paulina. He told me you had signed papers denying paternity.""

""I know, Elena,"" Diego whispered, his forehead resting gently against hers. ""I know everything. I found the returned letters. I found the forged buyout.""

He took her thin, callused hand, bringing it to his lips, kissing each knuckle with reverent devotion.

""I am so sorry, Elena. I let them build a wall between us. But the wall is gone now. You are safe. You are home.""
