Chapter 5: The Council of Spiders

By nightfall, the drawing room on the first floor was filled with the powerful architects of the Navarro family’s social circle.
Arthur Sterling, Paulina’s father and a formidable venture capitalist, sat in a wingback chair, his silver cane resting between his knees. Beside him stood Diego’s aunt, Beatrice, the matriarch who had managed the family’s social standing since Diego’s mother passed.
Diego walked in, having changed into a fresh white shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He carried a heavy manila folder.
""Diego,"" Beatrice began, her tone dripping with matriarchal authority, ""this scandal must be contained before the morning press prints the rumors. Arthur has agreed to overlook today’s hysterical outburst on the condition that the woman and the child are transferred to a private sanitarium in Maine tonight.""
""A sanitarium?"" Diego said, his voice deadly quiet as he leaned against the mantle.
""We will fund their care generously,"" Arthur Sterling offered, adjusting his gold cufflinks. ""A monthly stipend, full medical coverage, and a trust for the girl when she turns eighteen. But she cannot exist in this city. A bastard child from a disgraced former mistress will ruin the stock valuation of the maritime merger.""
Diego opened the manila folder and dropped its contents onto the mahogany coffee table.
Scattered across the polished wood were forensic accounting audits, forged bank transfers from five years ago, and certified audio recordings retrieved from his father's private estate safe—evidence proving that Arthur Sterling and Beatrice had paid a corrupt notary to forge Elena’s signature on the five-million-dollar buyout document.
""You didn't just lie to me, Beatrice,"" Diego said, looking at his aunt with chilling clarity. ""You committed wire fraud, forgery, and extortion.""
Beatrice’s face drained of all color. ""Diego... we did it for the family name! That girl was a penniless orphan with no pedigree!""
May you like
""That girl,"" Diego replied, stepping toward the door, ""is the mother of the sole legal heir to the Navarro estate. And you, Aunt Beatrice, have twelve hours to vacate the east wing. If I ever see you near my daughter again, these files go directly to the Attorney General.""
