The Golden Crest

That evening, after Mia had fallen asleep in her newly decorated nursery—surrounded by glowing celestial nightlights and shelves of fairytale books—Diego led Elena up to the private observatory on the mansion's roof.

The night sky was vast and clear, a canopy of sapphire velvet dotted with thousands of shimmering stars. The distant lights of the harbor twinkled like fallen embers.

Diego pulled a velvet box from his pocket.

Inside rested a stunning vintage ring—a radiant, unheated Ceylon sapphire encircled by five delicate, brilliant-cut diamonds, representing the five years they had been separated.

""Five years ago,"" Diego spoke, his voice deep, rich, and trembling with emotion, ""I gave you a golden button on a rainy night in Lisbon. I told you that wherever you went, my name and my heart belonged to you.""

He knelt on the stone terrace, holding the ring in his hands.

""I failed to protect you from the wolves, Elena. But I will spend every sunrise and every sunset of my remaining days building a sanctuary where you and Mia will never know fear, cold, or loneliness again.""

He looked up into her dark, tear-filled eyes.

Elena didn't hesitate. She dropped to her knees on the terrace, throwing her arms around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder as sweet, joyful tears washed away the last traces of winter.
