Chapter 6 - The Secret Behind the Canvas

Valerie didn't run. Instead, a terrifying, desperate calmness washed over her features as she straightened her posture, letting go of the easel. She smoothed her deep red velvet dress with hands that only barely trembled, lifting her chin with a hardened, defiant glint in her eyes.

"You think you’ve won something, Elena?" Valerie asked, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper that carried effortlessly across the silent room. "You think a crumpled snapshot and a child's green book can undo five years of legally binding contracts, gallery exhibitions, and international acclaim?"

Julian pulled himself up from the floor, brushing shattered glass off his expensive wool trousers. His face was twisted in an ugly mask of desperation and panic.

"Elena, listen to me," Julian pleaded, stepping forward with his hands raised in a placating gesture. "We can fix this. We can go home, sign the non-disclosure agreements, and put this nightmare behind us. Think of our standing in society. Think of what the board will do to my firm if this goes public."

Elena looked at her husband with an expression of profound, chilling pity.

"Your firm is already gone, Julian," Elena said softly. "Do you really think I spent the last six months sitting quietly while you transferred our assets? I didn't hire divorce lawyers. I hired forensic auditors."

Julian stopped dead in his tracks, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly like a fish out of water. "What... what did you say?"

"The bank accounts, the shell companies in the Caymans, the funding for Valerie’s art studio—it’s all flagged," Elena continued, her voice steady and lethal. "Federal marshals are freezing your corporate assets as we speak. That’s why you were so desperate to sell this painting tonight, wasn't it? You needed quick liquid cash to flee the country with your business partner."

Valerie spun around, glaring at Julian with sheer fury. "You said her name was off the accounts! You promised me the money was clean!"

"Shut up, Valerie!" Julian screamed, losing his composure completely as he lunged toward the artist, his hands clawing at the air. "You ruined everything! If you hadn't insisted on signing the canvas tonight, none of this would have happened!"

Before Julian could lay a hand on Valerie, two plainclothes detectives wearing dark overcoats pushed their way through the paralyzed crowd, flashing gold badges under the harsh gallery lights.

"Julian Vance and Valerie Miller?" the lead detective asked, his voice flat and authoritative as he pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You're both under arrest for wire fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny."
