Chapter 3 - The Weight of the Past

The clatter of the marker hitting the floor seemed to echo through the expansive gallery like a gunshot. The murmurs of the elite crowd died instantly, replaced by a heavy, suffocating silence. Valerie stood frozen beside her monumental canvas, her manicured fingers curling into the deep red velvet of her wrap dress. She forced her facial muscles to relax, dragging a slow, calculated breath into her lungs before offering the onlookers a tight, polite smile.
"Children have such wonderfully vivid imaginations," Valerie said smoothly, her voice carrying an practiced warmth that failed to reach her eyes. She bent down, retrieving the black marker from the floor with slow, deliberate grace. "Art speaks in many languages, darling. To a child, a ladybug is just a friend. To an adult, it’s a symbol of fragile luck."
Clara did not smile back. She planted her feet firmly on the polished wood, lifting the heavy green photo album higher. The gold foil lettering on the spine, faded and worn, caught the gallery lights.
"My mother told me you never saw this ladybug," Clara said clearly, her tone unwavering. "She said you weren't even there when the photograph was taken. She said you stole it from our attic."
A collective gasp rippled through the front row of onlookers. Several wealthy patrons exchanged uneasy glances, murmuring behind gloved hands. The gallery owner, a tall man with slicked-back gray hair and an expensive silk tie, hurried over, his face flushed with sudden panic.
"Security," the owner hissed to a pair of burly guards standing by the exit. "Get this child and her parents out of my gallery immediately. We will not tolerate disruptive stunts."
"Don't touch her!" Elena’s voice sliced through the air as she pushed her way violently through the crowd, her face stained with fresh tears. She threw herself between the security guards and her daughter, wrapping her arms protectively around Clara’s shoulders. "Touch my daughter and I will have every single one of you facing federal copyright infringement and fraud charges by morning!"
Julian arrived a moment later, breathing heavily, grabbing Elena’s wrist with a grip that made her wince.
"Elena, stop this madness right now," Julian whispered fiercely, his eyes darting frantically toward the whispering investors. "You are destroying our lives over a childhood fantasy. Valerie is a respected artist. She has receipts, she has contracts, she has a legal team!"

"She has my life, Julian!" Elena screamed, the restrained composure finally shattering into jagged shards. She turned the green photo album outward, shoving it directly into her husband’s face. "And you helped her bury it!"
