Chapter 1 - The Banquet Table Confrontation

The crystal chandeliers of the grand ballroom hummed with the muted frequencies of wealth, but the air at table four was suffocating. Elena Vance pressed her diamond-ringed fingers against her mouth, trying to trap the jagged sob tearing up her throat. Across from her, the heavy silver cutlery rattled against fine porcelain as her husband, Julian, stared blankly into his champagne glass, refusing to look at the weeping woman beside him.

Ten-year-old Clara reached out, her small fingers clutching the sleeve of her light blue dress embroidered with white floral patterns. She rubbed her mother’s arm with a gentle, grounding rhythm that felt far too mature for a child.

"Mom, let her sign it," Clara whispered, her voice cutting through the heavy tension of the banquet room like a sharp blade.

Elena pulled her hand away from her face, her eyes red-rimmed and fierce. She shook her head violently, the diamond drop earrings catching the merciless light of the overhead fixtures.

"She has no right to sign that painting, Clara," Elena hissed, her voice trembling with restrained fury. "That isn’t her art. That isn’t her memory to sell!"

"Elena, keep your voice down," Julian muttered, finally lifting his head. His jaw was clenched so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek. "The entire gallery is watching us. Do you want a scandal? Is that what you’ve been planning all along?"

"A scandal?" Elena laughed, a sharp, bitter sound that held no humor. "Julian, my daughter’s entire childhood is hanging on that wall two rooms away, being auctioned off to the highest bidder by a fraud in a red velvet dress! And you care about your stock portfolio?"

"Mom, we have to go back in there," Clara insisted, her dark eyes wide and unblinking. She clutched a thick green photo album against her chest like a shield. "The lady in red is finishing the signature right now."

Julian slammed his napkin onto the table, standing up so abruptly his chair screeched against the polished mahogany floor.

"You are not going near that artist, Clara," Julian ordered, pointing a finger down at his daughter. "We are leaving this instant, or I swear I will cut you both off completely."

Elena stood up to match her husband’s height, her chest heaving as she glared at the man she had trusted for twelve years.

"You can take everything, Julian," Elena whispered, her voice dropping an octave into a chilling register. "The house, the cars, the accounts. But you will not stop my daughter from showing the world the truth."

Before Julian could grab her arm, Clara turned on her heel and sprinted toward the gallery archway, clutching the green photo album tightly.
