Chapter 11 - The Contingency Trap

Margaret waved the thick document in the air, her predatory grin widening as she watched for a crack in Elena’s composure.
"You see, Elena, your husband was far more thorough than you give him credit for," Margaret continued, her voice ringing clear through the empty gallery. "He anticipated your little audit months ago. The moment those bank accounts were flagged, the corporate shield automatically transferred all assets into a blind trust managed exclusively by my firm. You don't own the painting. My firm does."
Clara clutched the green photo album tighter against her light blue dress, looking up at her mother with wide, anxious eyes. "Is she right, Mom? Can she take it back?"
Elena looked down at her daughter, then back at the smug attorney standing beneath the harsh gallery lights. Instead of panicking, Elena let out a calm, measured breath. She reached into the pocket of her tailored blazer and pulled out a crisp, official document bearing the gold seal of the State Superior Court.
"You're right, Margaret," Elena said, her voice entirely devoid of fear. "Julian did transfer the assets into a blind trust three hours ago. But he made one critical mistake."
Margaret’s smile faltered slightly. "What are you talking about?"
"He used corporate funds that were already under a federal injunction from the state probate court," Elena replied smoothly, stepping forward to hand the court document directly to the lead investigator. "Which means any transfer executed after 4:00 PM today is legally null and void under Section 11 of the Financial Crimes Act. Furthermore, since Julian concealed my marital assets without my notarized consent, the prenuptial agreement reverts entirely to my pre-marriage standing as the sole legal beneficiary of the Rostova Estate."
The investigator scanned the court seal, nodded firmly, and handed the document back to Elena with a respectful nod. "She’s right, Counselor. This trust is invalid. The artwork and all associated rights belong to Mrs. Vance."
Margaret’s face drained of color. The iron-willed composure finally shattered, leaving her staring at the papers in disbelief. "That’s... that’s impossible. Julian assured me the papers were clean."
"Julian lies to everyone, Margaret," Elena said coldly, turning her back on the attorney. She motioned to the investigator holding the rolled canvas. "Let’s go home, Clara."
