Chapter 2 - The Scorched Locket

The heavy gold chain of the locket swung gently against the rough, unprimed canvas backing, catching the gallery’s track lighting and casting a sinister, dancing shadow across Eleanor’s pale face. The ambient chatter of the elite crowd died away instantly, replaced by a suffocating, breathless silence that pressed against Clara’s eardrums. Security guards froze mid-stride, their hands hovering over their utility belts as the gravity of the hidden compartment sank into the collective consciousness of the room.
“Where did you get that?” Eleanor hissed, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register that completely vanished any trace of the weeping woman from the banquet table. She stepped in front of Clara, shielding the green photograph album with her body.
The blonde artist in the deep red velvet dress did not flinch. She slowly capped her marker with a soft, definitive click and turned around, her green eyes locking onto Eleanor’s with chilling familiarity. “You left it behind, Eleanor. In the ash. Right next to the crib that supposedly held an empty room.”
Clara clutched her green book tighter to her chest, feeling the sharp, unyielding edge of the polaroid cutting through the cardboard cover. She looked up at her mother, seeing a stranger behind the tears. “Mom, why does the girl in the painting have my exact birthday written on the back of her boots?”
“Clara, shut your mouth!” Eleanor screamed, breaking her own rule of quiet grace as she grabbed her daughter’s wrist, pulling her toward the heavy mahogany exit doors.
“Stop her! That’s the Carlyle estate heiress!” a voice shouted from the back of the gallery, setting off a chain reaction of flashing smartphone cameras and aggressive reporters rushing the velvet ropes.

Eleanor yanked the heavy oak door open, dragging Clara out into the cold evening air, but as the door swung shut behind them, a siren wailed in the immediate distance, cutting off their escape route completely.
