Chapter 13 - The Collapsing Vault

The ricochet of the gunfire echoed through the cavern like rolling thunder, shaking loose a cascade of small stones and dirt from the ancient ceiling directly above them. A heavy wooden beam, rotting and waterlogged from decades of exposure, cracked with a loud, ominous groan and crashed down onto the gravel path between Julian and Eleanor, blocking the exit tunnel completely.
“The structural support!” Catherine shouted, grabbing Clara and pulling her back against the granite slab as more debris rained down from the dark vault above.
Eleanor stumbled backward, dropping her service pistol into a deep puddle of saltwater as she stared up at the shifting ceiling in sudden, genuine terror. The illusion of absolute control had finally shattered, replaced by the primitive fear of being buried alive in the very caves where her crimes had begun twelve years ago.
“Julian! Help me!” Eleanor screamed, abandoning her sophisticated poise as she clawed desperately at the heavy wooden beam blocking the tunnel.
Julian lowered his gun, walking slowly toward her through the falling dust. He didn't offer his hand; he simply looked down at her with a heavy, unreadable expression. “You should have stayed in Paris, Eleanor. You should have left the past in the ashes.”
“If I go down, I’m taking the girl with me!” Eleanor shrieked with sudden, savage desperation. She lunged forward, her fingernails clawing toward Clara’s face with terrifying speed.
Catherine reacted instantly, stepping directly into Eleanor’s path and driving her shoulder hard into Eleanor’s chest. The impact sent Eleanor stumbling backward toward the jagged edge of the underground dock, where the dark, churning water of the ocean surged violently against the wooden pilings.

With a sharp cry, Eleanor lost her footing on the slick algae-covered wood and plunged backward into the freezing, black water below.
