Chapter 11 - The Footsteps in the Cave

The rhythmic, heavy crunch of boots on wet gravel echoed through the cavern, growing steadily louder from the far end of the underground tunnel. The beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight danced wildly across the wet stone ceiling, painting erratic circles of light just feet above their hiding place.
Julian raised his revolver, his thumb pulling back the hammer with a sharp, metallic click that sounded deafening in the enclosed space of the sea cave. Catherine pressed a comforting hand onto Clara’s shoulder, her breath shallow and controlled.
“Who is it?” Clara whispered, her voice barely a breath of air.
“The cleaner,” Julian muttered under his breath, his eyes fixed on the entrance of the tunnel.
Suddenly, a familiar voice rang out through the cavern, bouncing off the damp walls with a chilling, artificial sweetness that made Clara’s blood run cold.
“Clara, sweetheart, you really shouldn’t run off without saying goodbye to your mother,” Eleanor called out, her tone dripping with a terrifying maternal affection as she stepped into the dim light of the cave, holding a service pistol in her right hand with terrifyingly casual ease.
Eleanor’s dark blue off-the-shoulder dress was torn and stained with soot and mud, but her hair remained neatly pinned, and her expression was disturbingly serene. She scanned the cavern with her flashlight until the beam locked directly onto the slab of granite where Clara and Catherine were hiding.
“Come out now, Catherine,” Eleanor said smoothly, stepping closer while keeping her gun pointed squarely at the granite slab. “You’ve played your little art game for twelve years, but the canvas is finished.”
May you like
Catherine slowly stood up from behind the rock, her hands raised slightly, her green eyes fixed on Eleanor with burning contempt. “You can’t burn the truth this time, Eleanor. The ledger survived.”
