Chapter 10 - The Descent into the Cavity

The salt spray from the crashing waves below hit them like a physical wall as they plunged down the rusted, open-air metal staircase that clung desperately to the vertical rock face. Each step groaned under their weight, shaking violently in the relentless wind. Clara kept her eyes fixed on the back of Julian’s mechanic jacket, her small boots finding purchase on the slick, rusted rungs by pure instinct. Catherine brought up the rear, her red velvet dress torn at the hem, holding a heavy flashlight to guide their descent.

“How far down does this go?” Clara shouted over the roar of the ocean, her breath coming in ragged gasps as the physical exhaustion of the night finally began to take its toll.

“All the way to the old boathouse beneath the Carlyle estate foundations,” Julian called back without slowing his pace. “It’s the only part of the property the fire didn't completely consume twelve years ago.”

Clara stumbled, her knee slamming hard against a sharp metal bolt on the handrail, but she didn't cry out. She reached down, feeling the warm trickle of blood soaking through the fabric of her pale blue dress, but the physical pain was entirely overshadowed by the mental horror of what she now knew. Eleanor wasn't a grieving mother; she was a kidnapper who had built an entire suburban life on the ashes of a stolen identity.

They reached the bottom of the long metal staircase, stepping off onto a rotting wooden dock that extended out into a hidden sea cave. The air inside the cavern was thick with the smell of rotting kelp, damp stone, and old iron.

Catherine clicked off her flashlight, plunging them into near-total darkness, illuminated only by the faint, phosphorescent glow of algae clinging to the cavern walls.

“Quiet,” Catherine whispered, grabbing Clara’s shoulder and pulling her behind a massive slab of fallen granite. “Someone is already down here.”
