Chapter 9

The landing gear deployed with a loud, mechanical thud that reverberated through the aluminum frame of the aircraft, followed seconds later by the screech of rubber hitting the wet tarmac of the runway. The plane taxied smoothly toward the gate, the reverse thrusters roaring briefly before settling back into a quiet idle as the engines wound down. Passengers immediately began unbuckling their seatbelts, standing up in the cramped aisle to haul heavy roller bags from the overhead bins with impatient rustles. Elena remained seated in her window seat, her grey suit jacket buttoned tight, her face carved from stone as she waited for the bottlenecked crowd to begin moving forward. Across the aisle, Maya stood with her pink backpack securely fastened, her dark braided hair catching the harsh cabin lights as she watched the door at the front of the cabin swing open to reveal the grey, rain-streaked jet bridge. The air rushing in from the terminal smelled of damp concrete and jet fuel, carrying the familiar, gritty atmosphere of the Pacific Northwest. “Stay close,” Elena repeated, stepping out into the aisle and positioning herself slightly in front of the young girl to form a protective human barrier against the surging crowd of travelers. They shuffled slowly toward the exit, inching past the first-class seats and out through the threshold of the aircraft door. Stepping onto the jet bridge, the temperature dropped sharply, and the hum of the airport terminal filled their ears with a chaotic roar of announcements, rolling luggage wheels, and muffled conversations. Elena scanned the perimeter of the gate area as they approached the main terminal doors, her sharp eyes searching for the crisp suits and subtle earpieces that would betray an Apex Logistics reception team. Through the rain-speckled glass of the terminal windows, she spotted two men in identical dark coats standing near the arrival board, scanning the disembarking passengers with cold, practiced efficiency.
