Chapter 5

The hum of the engines seemed to drop an octave as the aircraft entered a stable, endless stretch of airspace over the Rocky Mountains. The other passengers had drifted into uneasy sleep, their heads resting against uncomfortable pillows or slumped awkwardly against the cabin walls. In the dim light, Elena turned fully in her seat, resting her elbow against the armrest and looking across the aisle toward Maya. The girl was no longer playing with the cracked plastic propeller; instead, she was tracing the seams of her pink backpack with a deliberate, rhythmic motion. “What’s your name?” Elena asked, keeping her tone soft, stripped of the defensive armor she usually wore like a uniform. Maya hesitated for a moment, her dark eyes evaluating the older woman as if weighing the safety of the disclosure. “Maya,” she said finally, her voice barely louder than the ambient rush of air conditioning. “Maya Brooks.” Elena felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach. The name Brooks was not unfamiliar; it belonged to Thomas Brooks, the union safety representative who had gone public three days ago with allegations of structural corruption at the Seattle docks—allegations that directly implicated Apex Logistics. Thomas Brooks had vanished forty-eight hours later, leaving behind a frantic voicemail for his estranged wife and a daughter who was now sitting three rows away, carrying a pink backpack that likely contained the missing physical evidence. Elena swallowed hard, feeling the immense gravity of the situation crashing down around her. She was not just sharing a flight with a random, bothersome child; she was sitting across from the central leverage point in a corporate war that was already turning lethal. “I’m Elena,” the woman said, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to maintain control. Maya stopped tracing her backpack and looked up, a spark of recognition flashing in her dark eyes. “I know,” Maya said softly. “You work for the company that made my dad go away.” The words hit Elena like a physical blow, stripping away the last remaining illusions she held about her career, her loyalty, and the safety of the aluminum tube hurtling through the dark sky.
