Chapter 1

The cabin air smelled of recycled oxygen, faint coffee, and the metallic chill of cruising altitude. Elena Vance adjusted her grey suit jacket, her posture rigid against the plush leather of the window seat. Her bare left foot rested lightly near the seat pocket in front of her, a small indulgence on the long transcontinental flight. Across the narrow aisle, nine-year-old Maya stood frozen, her oversized blue hoodie swallowing her small frame, while her patterned pink backpack shifted slightly on her narrow shoulders. Maya had been staring for too long, her dark braided hair framing a face that was entirely unreadable. Elena turned her head slowly, letting her gaze sharpen into something hard and unyielding. She did not want a child hovering near her space, and she certainly did not want the silent scrutiny. With deliberate calm, Elena offered a stern look and delivered the instruction with chilling precision. “You should keep quiet now,” she said, her voice dropping just low enough to remain private yet heavy with authority. Maya did not blink. She simply tightened her grip on the small plastic toy she held hidden in her palm, a tiny cracked propeller from a vintage aircraft, and took one slow step backward. The flight attendant, standing two rows up in the aisle, offered a polite, tense smile that didn't reach her eyes, sensing the friction but choosing to look away toward the galley. Elena turned back to the window, watching the endless sea of clouds below, unaware that this brief, frosty exchange was not an isolated moment of commuter annoyance, but the exact trigger for a sequence of events that would unravel her meticulously constructed corporate life. Maya retreated to her own seat three rows back, sliding into the window space beside an empty middle seat, her mind racing with details adults always assumed children were too young to notice. The pink backpack rested heavily on the floor, concealing a small, encrypted flash drive that didn't belong to her, but to the man who had pushed it into her hand at the boarding gate just minutes before he vanished into the terminal crowd.
