Chapter 12

The subterranean loading dock was a massive, concrete-walled cavern filled with the diesel fumes of idling delivery trucks and the metallic clatter of cargo being loaded onto freight palettes. Rain poured down in sheets through the open bay doors at the far end of the cavern, creating a silver curtain of water that blurred the view of the parking lot beyond. Elena pulled Maya behind a towering stack of wooden pallets wrapped in shrink-wrap, shielding them from the direct line of sight of the upper walkway where heavy security doors were beginning to open. Footsteps echoed heavily on the metal grating above, followed by the low, harsh murmur of two voices coordinating a search pattern. Elena held her breath, pressing her back against the rough wood of the pallet, her mind racing for a way out across the open expanse of wet concrete. She looked down at Maya; the young girl in the blue hoodie was entirely composed, her small hands resting calmly on the straps of her pink backpack, her dark eyes fixed on a red pickup truck idling near bay door number four. Through the heavy rain, Elena spotted the distinct dent on the rear tailgate and the silhouette of a burly man leaning against the cab, a white scar visible over his left eyebrow even under the dim amber glow of the security lights. It was Marcus. “Can you run?” Elena whispered down to Maya, her voice tight with tension. Maya nodded without hesitation, her jaw set with fierce determination. “On three,” Elena instructed, gripping the girl’s hand with absolute resolve. “One... two... three.” They broke cover from behind the wooden pallets, sprinting across the slick concrete floor through the pouring rain, splashing through puddles as the shouts of the security guards erupted behind them in the cavernous dock.
