Chapter 7 - Lockdown at Oak Ridge Middle

The fluorescent lights of the corridor seemed to blur as Elena sprinted past rows of lockers, her black hoodie snapping behind her. Investigator Chen’s voice shouting her name faded into the background roar of her own racing heartbeat. The text message burned on her screen: Emergency lockdown. It wasn't a drill; she knew the telltale digital formatting of the automated district alert system. Someone had triggered the security protocol at Oak Ridge Middle School, trapping every student and faculty member inside while unauthorized individuals roamed the halls.

She burst through the front exit of the high school, ignoring the shouting security guards behind her, and broke into a dead sprint across the asphalt parking lot toward the adjacent middle school campus three blocks away. The autumn wind bit at her cheeks, but she felt no cold, only the burning terror of a sister whose worst nightmare was unfolding in real time.

When she reached the perimeter fence of Oak Ridge Middle, the heavy chain-link gates were padlocked shut from the inside. Red emergency strobe lights flashed rhythmically above the main entrance doors, casting an eerie crimson glow over the empty playground where Leo had stood just yesterday. Through the reinforced glass windows of the lobby, she could see shadows moving—not teachers or police officers, but three figures in dark clothing wearing visitor passes that bore forged administrative signatures.

"Hey! You can't be out here! School is in lockdown!"

A campus security guard in a high-visibility yellow vest jogged up to the fence from the parking lot, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he waved his arms frantically. "Step away from the perimeter, kid! District orders!"

Elena grabbed the chain-link fence with both hands, her knuckles turning white, and glared at the guard with an intensity that made him step back involuntarily. "My twelve-year-old brother is inside that building, and the lockdown was triggered by the same people who are trying to intimidate my family. Open this gate right now, or I swear I will climb over it and break every window in this lobby."

The guard swallowed hard, looking at the fierce determination burning in her eyes. He fumbled with the ring of heavy keys clipped to his belt, his hands shaking. "I... I don't have the override code for the exterior mag-locks. The district administration center controls the lockdown remotely from the high school server room."

Elena’s blood ran cold. The high school server room—the very room where Principal Harrison and Coach Miller had just been cornered by state investigators. If the administrative servers were currently being seized or rebooted by Investigator Chen’s team, the lockdown system at the middle school was caught in a digital limbo, locked permanently down with no remote override available.

"Give me your radio," Elena demanded, holding out her hand.

The guard hesitated, then nervously unclipped the Motorola two-way radio from his belt and handed it over. Elena pressed the transmit button, her voice dropping into a calm, ice-cold command tone she didn't know she possessed.

"Investigator Chen, if you can hear this, report," Elena said into the static.

A few seconds of electronic hiss crackled, followed by Chen’s crisp voice. "Brooks? Where are you? We secured the server room, but the main mainframe just suffered a secondary remote lockout—"

"Listen to me very carefully," Elena interrupted, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage. "Coach Miller’s associates have locked down Oak Ridge Middle School remotely. My brother is inside. You have five minutes to force a hard system reboot from your end, or I am going to breach the front doors myself."

Before Chen could respond, the heavy glass doors of the middle school lobby clicked loudly, the magnetic locks releasing as the power abruptly cut out across the entire campus, plunging the building into emergency generator lighting. And from the shadows of the darkened hallway, a tall figure stepped into view, holding Leo by the collar of his jacket.
