Chapter 11 - Ghosts of the Stadium

The autumn rain had begun to fall in a cold, steady drizzle by the time Elena and Investigator Chen stepped out onto the damp grass behind the Oak Ridge High athletic complex. The towering concrete stands of the football stadium loomed out of the mist like a ruined amphitheater, silent and empty under the gray sky. The stadium VIP lounge—a glass-fronted suite perched high above the fifty-yard line—glowed with a faint, amber interior light, cutting through the gathering dusk.
"Someone’s up there," Chen whispered, resting her hand near her holster as they approached the heavy metal service door beneath the grandstands. "The cloud alert you received wasn't a glitch. Someone is currently downloading your father’s old files from the local terminal."
Elena’s jaw tightened. "It’s Principal Harrison. Or what’s left of his administrative team. They’re trying to scrub the final evidence before the grand jury convenes tomorrow morning."
They slipped inside through the unlocked service door, moving in silence through the concrete maze of the locker rooms. The air smelled of old sweat, damp towels, and aging linoleum. They climbed the metal spiral staircase leading directly up into the private VIP suite, their footsteps muffled by the rubber stair treads.
When they reached the landing, the heavy oak door to the suite was ajar. Soft keystrokes clicked rhythmically from inside, accompanied by a low, frantic murmur of frustration.
Elena signaled for Chen to wait, then stepped smoothly into the doorway.
Sitting at the polished mahogany conference table was not Principal Harrison, but Arthur Vance—Kyle’s father and the wealthy benefactor whose real estate empire had bankrolled the town’s corruption for decades. He looked disheveled, his expensive silk tie loosened, his graying hair matted with sweat as he frantically hammered away at a laptop connected to a portable hard drive.
"It’s locked," Vance muttered to himself, slamming a fist onto the table. "Damn it, where is the decryption key?"
"The decryption key requires a biometric signature from someone whose name isn't on a federal indictment," Elena said, her voice cutting sharply across the quiet room.
Vance whipped his head around, his eyes wide with panic as he spotted Elena standing in the doorway, with State Investigator Chen stepping up behind her with her badge clearly displayed.
"You," Vance hissed, standing up so fast his leather chair tipped backward and crashed onto the carpet. "You ruined everything! Generations of progress, decades of community stability, all torn apart by some bitter nobody who couldn't handle a little high school hierarchy!"
"Progress built on extortion and fraud isn't stability, Mr. Vance," Elena replied, taking a slow, deliberate step into the room. "It’s a criminal enterprise. And your time is up."
Vance’s face contorted into an ugly grimace. He reached down quickly beside the table, his hand wrapping around a heavy brass golf trophy mounted on a wooden base. "I’m not going down because of some scholarship brat!"
Before Vance could swing the heavy trophy, Chen drew her service weapon with lightning speed, leveling it squarely at his chest. "Drop the club, Mr. Vance. Unless you want your next real estate investment to be a six-by-nine concrete box."
Vance hesitated, looking from the barrel of the gun to Elena’s cold, unwavering gaze. With a ragged sigh of utter defeat, he dropped the trophy. It hit the floor with a dull thud.

As the state troopers moved in to slap handcuffs on the wealthy benefactor, Elena walked over to the laptop, unplugged the flash drive containing her father’s legacy, and slipped it safely into her pocket. But as she turned to leave, the laptop screen flashed, displaying a final automated system message that made her blood run cold: File transfer complete. Recipient: Unknown Global IP, Zurich.
