Chapter 13 - Darkness on the Fifty-Yard Line

The sudden plunge into absolute darkness was followed instantly by the harsh, blinding glare of the stadium's massive halogen floodlights flickering back to life. They didn't illuminate the field in a comforting white light, however; instead, they flared in a disorienting, pulsing crimson emergency strobe, casting long, blood-red shadows across the empty aluminum bleachers. The stadium’s public address system crackled to life with a loud, metallic shriek of feedback, followed not by a synthesized voice, but by the heavy, rhythmic breathing of an unknown individual speaking directly into a close-range microphone.
"Elena Brooks," a distorted, digitally masked voice echoed across the rain-slicked grounds, bouncing off the concrete walls with terrifying acoustics. "You thought you could pack up the files and walk away. But the game isn't over until the final whistle blows."
Investigator Chen instantly drew her service weapon, her tactical training taking over as she scanned the empty grandstands through the rain-streaked glass of the VIP suite. "Stay behind me, Elena. Someone has hijacked the stadium’s emergency broadcast relay system from an external terminal."
"It’s not an external terminal," Elena said, her eyes fixed on the control panel mounted against the back wall of the suite. A small green indicator light was blinking rapidly, signifying an active local connection. "The system is being manually overridden from the stadium’s master broadcast booth directly above us."
Before Chen could react, the heavy steel door leading to the upper maintenance ladder was kicked open with a tremendous crash. Dropping down from the catwalk above came a figure dressed in dark tactical gear, wearing a heavy motorcycle helmet with a dark, reflective visor that concealed their face entirely. The intruder didn't hesitate; they lunged forward, throwing a heavy smoke grenade directly through the open doorway of the VIP suite.
A thick, billowing cloud of dense white smoke erupted instantly, filling the small room with choking fumes and blinding visibility.
"Get down!" Chen shouted, coughing as she grabbed Elena by the shoulder and pulled her down behind the heavy mahogany conference table.
Through the haze of smoke, the sound of heavy boots stomping across the carpeted floor echoed loudly. The intruder wasn't trying to fight them; they were heading straight for the desk terminal where the primary data drive sat.
