Chapter 8 - The Stolen Life

The laminated marriage certificate lay on the glass coffee table like a ticking time bomb. Mark stared down at the photograph attached to the document. The woman pictured had the same general blonde hair and build as the Clara he knew, but the facial structure was unmistakably different—a sharper jawline, a different nose, completely different eyes.
"This... this is a forgery," Mark stammered, backing away slowly as if the paper itself might burn him. "Clara had plastic surgery? Is that what you're saying? That's insane!"
David Miller leaned forward on the sofa, wincing as the steel handcuffs clinked against his wrists.
"Plastic surgery? No, man. You don't understand," David said, his voice heavy with exhaustion and years of suppressed trauma. "The woman you married isn't Clara. Her real name is Sarah Jenkins—wait, no, that's the caseworker's name." David shook his head in frustration. "Her real name is Victoria Hayes. She was an accountant at the firm where I worked as a senior partner. She embezzled four million dollars from our clients, pinned the digital paper trail entirely on me, and then vanished off the face of the earth right before the FBI raided my office."
Sarah Jenkins, the CPS caseworker standing by Lily, gasped softly, her eyes widening in shock.
Mark turned his gaze slowly toward Detective Vance. The detective wasn't looking at David anymore. He was staring down at his own tablet, his fingers flying across the screen with frantic speed.
"Vance," Mark said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Tell me this is a nightmare. Tell me my wife isn't an international fugitive."
Detective Vance looked up, his face pale under the harsh recessed lighting of the living room.
"I ran the marriage certificate through the federal criminal database using David's Social Security number," Vance said grimly. "There is an active federal warrant for a Victoria Hayes, matching the physical description and age of the woman currently sitting in our squad car downstairs. She's wanted for wire fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny."
Mark felt the floor drop out from under him. He grabbed the back of the gray sofa to steady himself, his vision blurring slightly.
"And Lily?" Mark choked out, the word tearing through his throat. "If she's Victoria Hayes... who is Lily? Is Lily even my daughter?!"
Before Detective Vance could answer, little Lily slid off her chair, walked over to Mark, and tugged gently on his hand.

"Daddy," she said softly, her blue eyes filled with an unsettling maturity that made Mark’s skin crawl. "Mommy told me that if the bad men ever came, I was supposed to open the steel safe in the basement and give you the red folder."
